Blues
1 Alex Hodgman, 2 James Parsons, 3 Ofa Tuungafasi, 4 Gerard Cowley-Tuioti, 5 Scott Scrafton, 6 Dalton Papalii, 7 Blake Gibson (c), 8 Akira Ioane; 9 Augustine Pulu, 10 Otere Black, 11 Tanielu Tele’a, 12 Ma’a Nonu, 13 TJ Faiane, 14 Matt Duffie, 15 Melani Nanai.
Reserves:
16 Leni Apisai, 17 Marcel Renata, 18 Lua Li, 19 Tom Robinson, 20 Josh Goodhue, 21 Jonathan Ruru, 22 Harry Plummer, 23 Levi Aumua.Players not considered with injury: Sione Mafileo (ankle), Stephen Perofeta (pectoral), Jordan Trainor (thigh), Michael Collins (groin), Karl Tu’inukuafe (illness), Sam Nock (hand), Matt Moulds (hand), Jed Brown (hamstring), Jimmy Tupou (calf), Caleb Clarke (calf), Sonny Bill Williams (knee).
Players on leave, others with or returning from injury, and form have led to six changes to the Blues team to take on the Queensland Reds in Brisbane on Friday night. All Blacks Rieko Ioane and co-captain Patrick Tuipulotu will sit out their second stand-down game while fellow international Dalton Papalii makes a welcome return to the starting line-up. Injury has forced out Caleb Clarke on the right wing, replaced by Matt Duffie, with block-busting youngster Tanielu Tele’a moving to the left flank. Meanwhile the inside back pairing Augustine Pulu and Otere Black come from the bench to start in the changes made by coach Leon MacDonald. MacDonald bracketed Sonny Bill Williams to start but despite taking a full part in training, he believes another week is needed to complete his recovery.
“We had always ear-marked this game as a break for Rieko and Patrick but at the same time Matt Duffie has been itching to get his chance after a late start to the season with injury and Tanielu has been strong in his first season,” said MacDonald. “Upfront our locking stocks are competitive with Josh Goodhue back into the reserves after starting earlier in the season. “We are delighted to have Dalton recovered which gives us another chance to start this exciting back row and it goes without saying that Sonny has done everything possible to get himself back in shape. He was close but we are not taking any risks bringing him back until he is 100 percent.” It means Ma’a Nonu will again link with vice-captain TJ Faiane in the midfield for the 13th time in 15 games with the pair playing the full 80 minutes in all but two of those starts. “There’s a lot of healthy competition in this team, and we have always said that performance will dictate selection, and that has led to Augie and Otere getting their opportunities. “The whole team was disappointed with the performance last week at home against the Bulls where we just did not make the best of our chances and did not use the plentiful amount of possession wisely. “We want to put that right. We continue to train well and want to focus on transferring the performance on the training ground to game-day. We have two more opportunities to achieve that and if we do, then let’s see where that takes us.”

the illness to Tu’inukuafe is concerning, is that 2 or 3 weeks now?

Akira continues to get run into the ground..... Great....
i think it's time we accepted he's not playing in Black this year. I'm saving up a massive melt.

possibly numbering error?
Robinson showing as lock reserve and Goodhue as loosie reserve.
Who of Gibson or Dalton can play 8, if Akira doesnt get injured, he is looking at another 80 minute stint?

Dalton
He was very good as an 8 in school.
He has the size and ball carrying to cover 8 at this level. His ball carrying is actually one of the more underrated and underutilized aspects of his game.

The backrow is better with Dalton at 6.
Disappointed that we aren't using Robinson to cover lock. I'd like to see if he could do it at this level. Robinson/Sotutu would offer more from the bench than Goodhue/Robinson
I like what I have seen of Papali'i so far but to say that the backrow is better with him at 6 is forgetting how good has been Tom Robinson who is the standout player for the Blues this year.

@cgrant If Akira develops the way many Blues fans think he will then that trio could develop into New Zealand's best going forward. A good balance of height, power and hard edge.
"Going forward" in a ball carrying sense or in a 90's corporate wankspeak sense ?

If you look at the stats when Dalton plays he’s the worker of the back row, hits rucks and makes a huge amount of tackles, carrys the ball.
Robinson has been great, but isn’t as busy and the Blues suffer for it. Especially as the team pattern has him on the wing a lot.
When the team pattern also has Akira in the midfield, that’s not many loosies over the ball!

@Kirwan is that a fault of the pattern they are running then, or the players on the park for not sticking to thier roles?
Players might have the same position but the way they play suits them being in different parts of the structure, ie TR is stationed wide when he is on the park, whereas DP is used more centrally, so of course their work will be different.
Similarly when people were critical of Same Cane in years gone by when Ardie was making turnovers, bustling runs etc...they are used completely differently by thier respective teams, so again, while playing same positions, you cant directly compare stats to show who is the better/worse...just different.
All playing well to fit thier Job Description.
