@Bones and there it is, an explanation on a 20 year old rugby forum to rugby people that a knock from the hand that doesn't go forward is allowed.
Gee thanks, that's been bugging me for 50 years.
Every time this " knock down" pedantry arises is ALWAYS in the context of a deliberate knock on scenario.
Generally the central issue regards the appropriate sanction and after the first post it is assumed that everyone understands the ball was propelled forward by one hand in a failed intercept.
The context is clear. Factually, the ball went down ( they all do), pertinently, it went forward, otherwise it's fricken play on.
I can recall the threads where we discussed the interpretations of the severity of a deliberate knock down plague and the hand travelling backwards clause. Nobody misunderstood
the laws, even when someone said lineout tap backs, but many spitballed partially formed opinions.
Nobody didn't know a knock on. Or an overlap

I'm politely and gently pushing back on an insistence that a one handed failed intercept with yellow card potential ( a context I've repeatedly referred to) cannot be described on the fern as a "knock down".

Calling posters out for it, when there has been no break down in communication, is bizarre.

Triggered? I'm not. I understand the nuance of the knocked down description and subsequent opinion.

    "Deliberate" is heavily implied

Telling people what to say on a flimsy premise,

    In my opinion...😶

Anyway, rugby is full of knock ons, knock forwards, went back, went backwards, tap backs, the odd straight downs but, I reckon, not many knock downs without a context.

@Siam well if it's only a knock down, it's not forward. Play on. What's a pass that travels forward called?

Frizell really impressed me with some solid hits on D and he wasn't afraid to do the hard yards and showed some impact. I really hope he gets plenty of game time to build on his solid foundation. A Smith was good which is very promising, he must be using different toilets this year as last year his form really hit the bathroom floor.

I am really surprised none of the coaches can see the frailties of Li and he really does not suit the way rugby is going. The back three are becoming so important in the way they collect the high ball, read defence and cover space. I don't think a winger who can just outrun or muscle people is ever going to work again.

L Whitlock also keeping Rueben Thorne happy as I think he made it through the thread without being noticed.

Good point, but in his defence he was as active on the carry as I've ever seen him.

@Bones nope. Commentaries, referees, invariably use the adjective back or backwards, especially in a failed one handed intercept context

    Sorry. Bollocks.

As mentioned before I've had instances of balls being knock down backwards with calls for penalties because they've misunderstood commentaries whinging about "knock downs".

@Bones The ref's said it twice already in a half of rugby in chch.

    Sigh. Nevermind.

Good, hopefully the adult rugby fans on this site won't be further subjected to this type of condescension:

"Anyway, the issue is that people don't understand it. People literally think that knocking the ball down is an offence. We even have people saying that there should be a penalty if you try to slap a ball back and it goes forward."

    This !!!!!

@Bones Not on the fern you haven't.

I'm sorry to dump @taniwharugby rugby in it, but I'm sure he'll be honest, and confirm that he was if the opinion that knock downs should be penalised.

Now @taniwharugby is one of our most sensible and knowledgeable posters. But he was of the opinion that knock downs are illegal. (Please let me know if I've fucked that up TR?)

So for fuck sake a knock down is not fucken illegal. A deliberate knock forward is.

@booboo Yes he was very prominent on the carry. I think on one of his many expeditions he ran at least 4 metres.

@booboo I think this is an issue of semantics and you telling people how they should describe a pretty unambiguous scenario in a game

We don't have to be that finicky do we?

    It's the wrong word. Simple.
Would you be happy with people talking about the game-day sixteen?
Just semantics, yeah?... one little word, that isn't quite correct, but who cares?

It's describing something else completely and in direct relation to the laws! If a player or the ball goes out of play past the try line, what's it called? Just out?

@booboo no my view was on deliberate knocks full stop should be illegal, not a misunderstanding of current rules.

Where someone has no show of regathering an intercept but just slap at the ball, back, up, down, forward.

Ok. Sorry to drag you into it 🙂

Edit: won't get into that one here...
