Further back, Greg Chappell went through a bad patch and briefly got christened "Chappello".

He was never called that. It was one of those "nicknames" that people thought were cool, but actually are quite try hard. Nobody (heh) gives a fellow player a nickname that implies he's actually perfect. They call them "Tugga" or "Beaver" or "Goldenballs".
Cullen was called the Paekakariki Express, but that's an epithet (like Alfred "the Great") not a nickname. Who calls their mate "Paekakariki Express"?

Yeah. We know. But still funny.

Yeah, there are nicknames given by team mates, nicknames given by fans and nicknames given by journalists or commentators (which can be more like epithets; I doubt anyone in the Old Trafford dressing room called George Best "the Fifth Beatle").
The very best nicknames e.g. Pinetree/Iceman/Whispering Death end up being used by all three groups.
