Magpies - 2019 Mitre 10 Cup
-
Two snippets from the HBT's article about this weekend's club rugby:
Thanks to @kiwimatrix for drawing my attention to this:
Former Blues and Northland prop Namatahi Waa provided plenty of grunt for Taradale Rugby and Sports in this Tareha Recreation Reserve victory. "Namatahi has settled in the Bay with the aim of making the Magpies in the future and he's got the goods.
Some of our Super boys are back:
Hurricane Danny Toala and Highlander Folau Fakatava displayed the benefits of their Super Rugby experience for Auto Super Shoppe Hastings Rugby and Sports in this Flaxmere Park drubbing. Toala had stints at centre and first five-eighth and used his tremendous pace and lethal step on his way to two tries. Halfback Fakatava took the field as a 50th minute substitute and increased the tempo. His Highlanders teammate Marino Mikaele-Tu'u will return to the side this week.

@Number-10 he's from up this way originally, but is a good prop, we never got to see the best of him due to injury, but will be a good option for you guys as he can play both sides as well
-
@taniwharugby Would he have come down from Northland or did he go overseas and has just returned?
-
@Number-10 I think he was injured early on last year (started 1st 2 games) and either didnt renew his contract or wasnt offered one.
Only played about 30 times for Northland from 2014 through to 2018
-
@taniwharugby @Number-10 According to this post from @Steven-Harris from February 2018, he had neck surgery early last year.
-
@Stargazer yeah was a shame as I rated him (can no longer rate him if he pulls on those Black and white hoops )
Started 8 times in 2014, 8 times in 2015, 10 times in 2017 then started his 2 games last year, was v Auckland i think he was injured.
on the bench for 3 games for Blues in 2015
-
@taniwharugby I had a look at the Northland team line-ups from last year, and he didn't play in 2018. He last appeared in Northland's matchday 23 for the game against Auckland on 26 August 2017 (in which he left the field in the 45th minute). Could it be that you've mixed up the years?
-
@Stargazer it very well could be just seen one of the pages I was looking at, shows it as 2017/2018 season, duh! When I click in it says 2017.
Yeah he played 2 games in 2017, starting v BOP & Auckland

No McNicol, but great to see Makene named in the squad!
Surprised to see Hayes named at lock; thought he was a loosie.
Kaifa at 6; last season he only played 7. Not sure where he plays for Clive.
No Kereru-Symes and Flanders, yet.Anyone going to this game? I'd really like to hear how some players go (Devery, McClutchie, Makene and Sheild in particular).
-
There will be plenty of interest in the form of one of their Hastings clubmates, lock Lucas Albornoz. "Lucas had a couple of games for Northland last year at Mitre 10 Cup level. This will be an opportunity to see how he can handle the physicality and speed of the game when we give him time off the subs bench," Ozich said. "He works hard and I'm eager to see how he goes at set piece time at this level," Ozich added.
@taniwharugby Anything you can tell us about this player?
I'm a bit surprised they're looking at another lock, since we already have plenty.

@Stargazer Won't be able to make it afterall (damn dental appointment and treatment - not to mention the rather extraordinate size of the bill!) so hopefully Number10 will be able to cast his expert eye on proceedings and give us his rundown on happening later tonight.
Any sign of Peter Russell's 'Poo mob being named yet? -
@Stargazer think he is a bit short for a genuine lock (at the highest level) but one of those hard working grafters, gets through a power of work and does his job efficiently.
Unsure if he is likely to get called up for Canada in the RWC, assume not?
-
@Stargazer Yep, hope to be at the game tomorrow night. It's supposed to start raining tomorrow afternoon/night?
I believe the NZ U20 have a fixture to play against Fiji U20 in a week or two, this may explain the absence of Kereru-Symes and Flanders.
I watched the NOBMarist v Clive match on Saturday and Sam McNicol had a slight limp on his left leg after being tackled to the ground in the second half, although he did play out the whole 80 - this might explain his absence.
-
@Number-10 Hmmm, if that U20 game on 20 July is the reason for their absence (I can't imagine, it's almost 3 weeks from now), it's disappointing to see McClutchie in the squad.
It's not a NZU20s game after all, but a NZ Maori U20s. I know looks can be deceiving (DMac, MMac, Karpik), but Burke doesn't look like he's Maori. I'm going to spit fire if they don't replace him with McClutchie!

@Stargazer 26 - 10 at halftime, thats very pleasing to hear. The 'Poo's 2nd half lineup looks to be not quite as good as the one listed to play the first half so hopefully our coaching staff don't make too many willy nilly and reckless changes and we can roll on about sixty or seventy points againt them. Bit of a shame the visiting team got off nil, four long range penalties presumably making up their tally?
