Magpies - 2019 Mitre 10 Cup
-
There will be plenty of interest in the form of one of their Hastings clubmates, lock Lucas Albornoz. "Lucas had a couple of games for Northland last year at Mitre 10 Cup level. This will be an opportunity to see how he can handle the physicality and speed of the game when we give him time off the subs bench," Ozich said. "He works hard and I'm eager to see how he goes at set piece time at this level," Ozich added.
@taniwharugby Anything you can tell us about this player?
I'm a bit surprised they're looking at another lock, since we already have plenty.

@Stargazer Won't be able to make it afterall (damn dental appointment and treatment - not to mention the rather extraordinate size of the bill!) so hopefully Number10 will be able to cast his expert eye on proceedings and give us his rundown on happening later tonight.
Any sign of Peter Russell's 'Poo mob being named yet? -
@Stargazer think he is a bit short for a genuine lock (at the highest level) but one of those hard working grafters, gets through a power of work and does his job efficiently.
Unsure if he is likely to get called up for Canada in the RWC, assume not?
-
@Stargazer Yep, hope to be at the game tomorrow night. It's supposed to start raining tomorrow afternoon/night?
I believe the NZ U20 have a fixture to play against Fiji U20 in a week or two, this may explain the absence of Kereru-Symes and Flanders.
I watched the NOBMarist v Clive match on Saturday and Sam McNicol had a slight limp on his left leg after being tackled to the ground in the second half, although he did play out the whole 80 - this might explain his absence.
-
@Number-10 Hmmm, if that U20 game on 20 July is the reason for their absence (I can't imagine, it's almost 3 weeks from now), it's disappointing to see McClutchie in the squad.
It's not a NZU20s game after all, but a NZ Maori U20s. I know looks can be deceiving (DMac, MMac, Karpik), but Burke doesn't look like he's Maori. I'm going to spit fire if they don't replace him with McClutchie!

@Stargazer 26 - 10 at halftime, thats very pleasing to hear. The 'Poo's 2nd half lineup looks to be not quite as good as the one listed to play the first half so hopefully our coaching staff don't make too many willy nilly and reckless changes and we can roll on about sixty or seventy points againt them. Bit of a shame the visiting team got off nil, four long range penalties presumably making up their tally?
-
A couple of quick tries from Manawatu see the score tied 26 all. Approx 15mins to play.
Game over. Tyrone Dodd-Edwards scores the match winner and we take it out 31-26. Thanks for everyone who turned out on a cold wet night to cheer the boys on. See you again in round 1 of the Mitre 10 Cup Official Manawatu Turbos we can’t wait.

Was not an inspiring match, yep 31-26 final score after leading 14-7 at halftime. HB led 26-12 in the second half, Manawatu levelled at 26-26, and a try to Tyrone Dodd-Edwards with 5 minutes left became the difference
First 65 minutes was played in drizzling rain so there were a few handling errors.
Not much spectacular play. Halfback Zac Donaldson made three good breaks around the scrums/rucks and from one of them scored his try going on the blindside of ther scrum
Lincoln McClutchie looked class, made one really good break but then slipped on the cricket block when angling to link up with his outsides. Made two deft kicks, a long crosskick to the open side right wing Ollie Sapsford who caught it on the full and in the second half a neat chip over the advancing Manawatu backline which centre Neria Fomai caught on the full. For Buckley's try in the second half, as the pass was coming to him McClutchie slapped the ball on to second five Timo Vaiusu. If McClutchie had caught the ball and then passed he would have got smashed after catching the ball and before he could unload it.
Caleb Makene was safe under the high ball at fullback but did not have much to do.
HB had the dominant scrum in the first half. At a scrum 5 metres from the HB line and a Manawatu feed, HB pushed them back and HB number eight Hemopo came away with the ball. The props were changed at halftime - Braidwood and Rakete-Stones off and Hintz and Long on and the scrum advantage disappeared.
Josh Kaifa captained the side and played the whole 80 and was prominent and Elijah Martin looked okay at lock, playing about 70 minutes.

HBT report of the preseason game against Manawatu. Was Dondaldson really that good, or is this another over the top conclusion from Hurndell?

Yes, I think Donaldson had a good game - he kicked three or four times, added to the running and passing he mixed up his game well. Also made a good tackle in cover defence on one occasion - if he had missed it probably would have been a try to Manawatu.
Assuming Weber is picked to go the World Cup and therefore unavailable for the Magpies you, of course, would start with Fakatava in the Mitre 10 Cup.

Some snippets from the HBT article about today's Maddison Trophy final:
We know who our third hooker is this season! Not surprised.
He [Jack Nelson-Murray] admitted to being disappointed at missing out to Devery in the battle for the third-string hooker's role in the Magpies squad behind Maori All Black captain Ash Dixon and New Zealand under-20 captain Kianu Kereru-Symes.
Injuries ...
His team will miss the services of loosie Hannon Brighouse and Magpies backs Stacey lli and Sam McNicol who are all on the injured list.
More injuries ...
Even without Highlanders loosie Marino Mikaele-Tu'u and Magpies prop Josiah Tavita-Metcalfe, who are on the injured list, Hastings have enough ammunition to win by three to six points. Mikaele-Tu'u has a stress fracture in a shin and will be out of action for at least six weeks. Tavita-Metcalfe has a quad problem.
So Marino will miss the start of the Mitre 10 Cup season
With Tiaan Falcon out for the season, and Jonah Lowe and Ben May also injured, I hope there aren't too many more on the injured list.
-
Good news, it looks like no injuries for the contracted Magpies players from the Maddison Trophy final

@Stargazer When is the magpies squad named, it must be soon??
