Yeah LOVE the idea of a plate competition. Makes getting 3rd in the pool more meaningful, esp if there are 6 teams per pool in future WCs which I hope there will be. Also it gives lower ranked teams a taste of knockout World Cup rugby which is super exciting.
And as it's straight to SF, its one week further advanced in scheduling tyhan the main knockouts, i.e. two plate SFs on the same weekend as the four cup QFs, then the plate final the weekend of the cup SFs. That way the cup final and cup 3rd/4th games are the only matches on the final weekend which is as it should be, no distractions. I'd do away with the idea of a plate 3rd/4th playoff tho.

@Bones Yep, and if there was meaningful prize money attached to the plate, then it could be a decent windfall for whichever (likely minor) union won it. Imagine if one of the PI teams were able to pay their players a sizeable win bonus that came with the plate over and above their usual match fees for a WC?
Also in 2015 you would have had the comedy situation of hosts England playing Japan in one plate semi, and Georgia vs Italy in the other.

The WR sevens series has their 2-tiered playoff system so the teams that don't finish 1st or 2nd in their pool are still involved in playoffs. Obviously tournament points are important so they need to rank all the teams, which is why the losing quarter-finalists also play each other to decide 5th-8th. But there is a precedent.

As long as they keep the 3rd/4th playoff I’m happy.

Is good there haven't been huge blowouts thus far...expect as we go into the final couple of pool games when some of the big guns face minnows injury and fatigue will take it's toll and we will likely see some of these big scores we usually do.

Rugby World Cup 2019: England could receive shock boost as Typhoon Mitag threatens France vs USA
England could receive a huge boost to their Rugby World Cup quarter-final hopes after it emerged that Pool C rivals France could have their game against the United States on Wednesday abandoned. World Rugby issued a statement on Sunday morning to confirm that both France and USA, who are due to meet in the city of Fukuoka next week, have been informed of contingency plans if the match is unable to go ahead. It’s expected that Typhoon Mitag, the 17th of the season in Japan, will see high winds and heavy rain batter the region as the week progresses. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the Typhoon is moving towards a projected path that will see it miss the coastline, although World Rugby are still preparing for the worst should the tropical cyclone hit. If the game is cancelled, World Rugby stipulates that France vs USA would be scored a 0-0 draw, meaning that the French would miss out on a potential five-point haul if they were to secure a bonus-point win, and instead take just two points from the match. That would give Les Bleus a serious disadvantage to England, who have already take a maximum 10 points from their games against Tonga and the USA, and who face Argentina next Saturday before taking on France in ‘Le Crunch’.A World Rugby statement said: “World Rugby and Japan Rugby 2019 are monitoring Typhoon Mitag, which is developing off the south west coast of Japan. “Based on the latest information from our weather information provider and the Japan Meteorological Agency, the Typhoon could bring high winds and heavy rain to the southern island of Kyushu on 2 October, possibly impacting the France versus USA match at Fukuoka. “The latest information indicates that the Typhoon is moving further away from Japan’s coastline than originally predicted, and the impact risk is reducing. However, in the best interests of the teams and the integrity of the tournament, we have informed France and the USA of the contingency plans in the event that adverse weather means that it is not possible to play the match in Fukuoka on the scheduled date. “We will continue to closely monitor this developing situation in partnership with our weather information provider, local authorities, transport providers and the teams, and will provide a further update tomorrow. Fans are advised to monitor official Rugby World Cup channels for any updates. “Fans visiting from outside Japan are reminded that while typhoons can vary in terms of strength and intensity, they are a normal occurrence in Japan and the vast majority have minimal impact on daily life.” -
The article talks about the match being abandoned but the quote suggests it might be moved if the weather hits:

Organisers said they would continue to monitor the typhoon and update teams and fans on Monday. New Zealand and Canada are also in Kyushu for their match on Wednesday, although the game is at Oita on the north-eastern corner of the island..
Organisers also issued a similar warning last week about Tropical Storm Tapah, that threatened to upset the first weekend's matches although it had little impact and all the games went ahead as planned.

Not counting the game against the ABs:

Italy is unlikely to beat South Africa, so will probably end up with a maximum of 2 bonus point wins (Nam, Can) and if they can stay within 7 points of SA, another bp: 11 points max

Canada or Namibia: unless their game against each other ends up in a draw (giving them a max of 3 points each), will end up with a max. of 4 or 5 points, the other country with 0 or 1 point max (assuming they don't collect losing bonus points, but that won't matter anyway).
Now, if one of the ABs games is cancelled this may mean that
- Italy ends up at a maximum of 13 points
- Canada or Namibia ends up at a maximum of 7 points (and maybe losing bonus points)
What about the ABs?
Already in the bag: 4 points
Add 2 points from a draw (cancelled match): that makes 6 points
Add a minimum of 4 points for the other games that they are likely to win: 8 + 6 points = 14 points (which is more than Italy)Unless my calculation is off, we will still make the QF if one game is cancelled and we win the other games.
Whether we finish first or second in the pool, depends on bonus points from the non-cancelled games. If we finish on equal points with SA (15 points), we end up on top, because we've won the game against SA. We only need to win one of the non-cancelled games with a bonus point to achieve that.

Been talking about this for years - we get heaps of rain in September and October - usually all at once, usually via typhoons.
It’s a bit surprising that the organizers did t consider how to get around that. I assume the games will be moved. If not, it’s a joke.
