Good record ( although he underachieved all things considered ) and outstanding captain. That to me is why he'll always get mentioned in an all time XI
The issue with Flem was he played for NZ. He debuted the same summer as Matthew Hayden and a year after Justin Langer. All three posted initial promising returns but were quickly found out at international level. The two Australians had the luxury of being dropped and coming back once their game had matured. Flem couldn't dropped due to lack to our lack of depth and his growth was further stunted by the captaincy.
If he played for another country and was able to be put back in the domestic oven for a couple more seasons his career is remembered just for the '01 period onwards and is at worst carrying the drinks for an all time XI.
Yeah I think he probably misses out on he top team but for me captains the 2nd XI. ( which is a vastly inferior team, particularly the bowling )

Bowling attack for the second XI for me would be:
Richard Collinge/Cowie
Chats (if you look at the footage from his playing days, he moved the ball off the pitch appreciably at times - a lot more than we think nowadays)/Bartlett
Nash/Vettori
Cairns/ BracewellI'm postulating that we are playing on pre-drop in pitches.

When Bryan Young got his double did they declare?
At tea on the second day 7 down with Dipak also not out on 40 odd. Looking at the scorecard it looks to have rained most of the next day which was probably the consideration.
Young, Sutcliffe, Kane and Fleming all had good chances at 300 but gave them up in the interests of the team. Sutcliffe was declared on only 2 down!!
Does really show that unless you are batting second on a road after giving up ~600 there is almost has to be a degree of putting the individual first to get there.
If Kane had faced as many balls as Latham and kept up his scoring rate he would have passed 400 ...
Ah yes but he didn't...
... if de Grandhomme ...
My point was that Kane did not look like getting out (until he did) and was taking no risks to score at a run a ball. Extrapolate that for 2 days of batting and voila, Lara's 400 can be beaten.

I think it's fair to say that Kane, if he allows himself a moment of self reflection, should be very disappointed at missing out on a golden opportunity to post a record score on a perfect batting pitch

It would be nice to be talking about wickets...

Aside from Vettori who should walk into the top team that attack is pretty B grade
-
SL looking comfy. Hopefully wags can winkle one out

Are you implying that the arguments for Southee to be man of the match instead of Latham for taking 12 wickets, and declarations that certain spin bowlers should be nowhere near this side... were TSF jumping the gun slightly?

At an economy rate of 5.49 he's not even buying one unfortunately
-
@donsteppa I'm not fussy on who takes a wicket! Timmy getting 1 would be a good start to that discussion.

Someone on Cricinfo suggested throwing the ball to Latham for the golden touch...!
-
Kane underbowls himself something chronric. Is he worried about chucking?
Not that he's necessarily going to be an all-rounder or even a regular bowler but these long partnerships are exactly when he should be rolling over his arm for a couple of overs.
-
Incredible partnership between these two, really gutsy stuff. Well done.
-
Not one wicket all day, what a bloody joke!

Almost what we did to them
-
Good thing Santner wasn't bowling out there today, with no wickets taken we'd have never heard the end of it...
Bloody impressive batting.
-
I thought the test would be wrapped up before tea. Looks like the weather will play a part and it'll be a draw but given the fact the BCs just simply didn't dominate today they don't deserve to win to be honest.
-
So what target will SL set?

Mathews is a class act. He has 200 runs in the match.
Of course it would’ve been great to roll them today and win by an innings, but it shows how great test cricket is that after a day a match has turned because of patience and application.

Had a check and Fleming's conversion rate was better than Parore, Coney, Guptill, Rutherford, Young.
No NZ players really make the grade on conversion rates except Crowe (48.57)
Of contemporary players, both Clarke and Hayden ended up with more centuries than fifties -

The first time ever in a test match in NZ.
-
I'm slightly happy that Sri Lanka have made a fight of this even though I still think we will win. Goes to show what a road Wellington is. Still my favourite Cricket ground.

@hooroo Weather forecast is rain all day.
Oh! Ok. Well done to Sri Lanka then. When is Test #2 starting?
-
Bit cloudy today but certainly no rain in sight. Any chance they can start now?
-
-
-
Just started drizzling. Fuck
-
its already started to drizzle

Fair play Sri Lanka, surviving a whole day without a single wicket under pressure is some feat. Draw well and truly deserved.
I think the Basin pitches are getting a bit flat. When teams bowl first because they know the day 4/5 pitch is going to be an absolute road I don't think they are getting it quite right.

Yeah was wondering that myself even late in our innings.
Tough to get the balance though because our pitches generally improve over time so we'd be risking a total green top that would make winning the toss even more decisive.
-
This rain is extra frustrating because the conditions look good for swing so with a little luck we could rip through them in a session.

Good call, although it's a tough balance when overhead conditions play so much of a part in Wellington. With even a little bit of spice in the pitch and two overcast mornings you almost guarantee a three day test.
Yesterday does show the weakness in our bowling attack and it's one England have struggled with in the past too. Without half-decent overhead conditions if the opposition can hold their nerve against Wagner we don't really have a way of "forcing" a wicket. An out and out quick would really add a dimension to our attack even if they are somewhat inaccurate and can only bowl two five over spells in the day.

I assume Adam Milne is either crocked or out of favour? He hasn't really shown any X-factor yet, but it is nice to have a guy with top end pace

The chance of Adam Milne playing a test is very slim. I would say Lockie Ferguson has a much better chance. However, it seems getting into the test team at the moment is particularly challenging as we have a good trio the selectors dont want to drop.
-
Ferg's only chance at the moment is if we play 4 seamers which is pretty unlikely.

Didn't Milne injure himself into becoming a specialist white ball bowler?
Was awesome at CWC 2015. Just not kicked on I think due to injury.

Apparently Henry tore the house down in county cricket. 70 odd wickets at 12 or something.
Need Gollum to jeets him.
Be nice to see him bowling well consistently
