NZs favourite sporting moment is a bit of a stretch..
It's a popular vote rather than awarded by the jury so it obviously is (at least amongst voters).
Was mentioned on sports breakfast (radio) this morning maybe the local soccer community got behind it and voted for it on mass

So none of the other events inspired people enough to get behind it and organise something similar.
It was an amazing run with great drama, it got great coverage and the players all came across really well when interviewed. Ticks all the boxes to be the favourite moment.

Looking at the NZRU annual Report
and looking at the awards section. It really bothers me that Kendra Cocksedge was awarded the Kel Tremain Memorial Player of the Year trophy.
I'm not bothered that a female players has won the supreme award. I'm bothered that the historical line of tradition of this award is broken. Tradition matters to me. Even if the Men's player award was only named after Kel Tremain in the early/mid 90s. There's about 40 or 50 years of tradition thrown out the window. Although the NZRU leave almost all of the marketing value of this award on the table unexploited (see the Brownlow and the Dally M for examples of how to do it better).
From looking at the annual report their appears to be no men's player of the year award at all. We can only guess which of the other 3 nominees (Retallick, C Taylor, Mouga) are the men's player of the year? Hopeless.
A new supreme category should have been created, not the Men's category bastardised.

Agreed. I mean the argument would be that any male player would dominate like Lomu x 100 in the female game. The natural response of course is that it's an unfair comparison and that there are clear differences between men and woman. So clearly they are two different games so why the hell have one award for both? It's not like they'll be doing the same for netball any time soon.

I can't even find a list of historical winners of the NZ rugby player of the year on the internet. I used to know a few off by heart as a youngster from the old print Rugby Almanacs.
I think I might need to look up NZ Rugby Quizzes for the info as I think he had a quiz on the subject.

KR Tremain Trophy was, I think, instituted in 1994.
There was a NZ Player of the Year award prior to that, started 1971. I think SM Going was the first winner, GA Knight won it 1981.
Yes, you're correct. I remember Going being the first winner.
Kirwan won it 87. Fox in 88. I'm trying to recall the winner in Baby Black year 1986.
Pene won it in 1993, and his direct replacement (Zinzan) won it the following year 1994.
Two absolute greats Christian Cullen and Michael Jones never won the award.

Jones' 2 best years (87 and 88) was Kirwan and Fox.
Cullen's 2 best years (96 and 97) was Fitzpatrick and Jeff Wilson.
Not bad competition .....

Award for Character: Doddie Weir
Happy Birthday to Doddie Weir, 50 today.

Humbling to see the Big Man take what he learned playing Rugby Union (gather a team around you and fight with all your strength) into his battle with Motor Neuron Disease. A top man and one of Rugby's great characters.
Raising a glass to you, Doddie. 🥃
