@Stargazer The Question is are there players in the Knights good enough watching the u/20s Newell at TH has not impressed nor Mcleod maybe Grace could step up not sure about Burke or Gilbert either thats from a Crusaders region perspective. Seems to be a bigger drop off this season of quality in the u/20s which is a worry.

Some Interesting Recruitment needed for 2020 by the Crusaders they will need to find replacements for

    Owen Franks
    Sam Whitelock
    Kieran Read
    Jordan Taufua
    Ryan. Crotty
and maybe Matt Todd,Luke Romeno and Tim Bateman

Worst case scenario that we lose all those players - we'll be trading our Rolls Royce pack in for a Honda.

Moody, Taylor, Alaalatoa, Barrett, Strange, Sanders, Harmon, Douglas

    Perry, Makalio, Jager, Dunshea, Blackadder

It's OK, but most teams won't lose sleep over it. Think we need to retain Todd and Romano.

@Chris-B especially losing that much experience Todd and Romano would be great to keep hold of.
Tamati Williams I noticed played on TH side for NZ U/20's V Japan so may shape up as a Franks replacement being able to play both sides.Hes a big unit and looks able to handle himself.

Was good of Canterbury to develop the Brumbies and Australian talent for them.

Some discussion on Frost back on page 3 and 4 of this thread.

So Frost has only spent one of this three-year academy contract in Chch before going back to Oz. Typical example of a young kid not being patient. It could have been worse, like buggering off to Oz after finishing his 3-year contract.

Crusaders had to know this was always on the cards to happen - doesn't the bloke's old man work for Rugby Australia or something.

He's not that good, if he was we'd have fought harder to keep him.

He was here for about five minutes so probably didn't soak up a helluva lot. Whatever he had soaked up didn't help him make any sort of impact either. He'll probably be about as good for Aussie rugby as that other prodigy Will Skelton.

Who pays for the Crusaders academy funding? Is it financed by NZ rugby? If so, I find that whole episode really strange.

It's no different to the multitude of non-NZ players who've represented Super Rugby teams since 1996 and been paid by the NZRU. The academy is a shared resource but if you allocated a share by player it's probably more expensive to pay a contract. A few off the top of my head below.

    Fa'atau
    Decrezceni
    Caucau
    D Ioane
    Tanaka
The English lock who came to Canterbury and the Chiefs poached, circa 2012
    Vunipola
    Nadolo
    Ardron
    Haskell

pretty sure Debreczeni can play for NZ though (born in Auckland) and if he werent made of glass, given the names being thrown around when D-Mac went down, his name mighta been thrown about too....

    @shark

I see that argument but feel like it is different to an academy, which should be purely about development of NZ talent.

I could be wrong, but I think some of those examples (or at least some others from the Chiefs at least) are funded by cooperative agreements.

Also, he's not a PI player - he's an Australian. There's no development of the 2nd tier argument to be made either.

At best, it's an attempted poach; at worst, it's pissing away money to develop an Aussie player.

Now, if the money is the Crusaders alone; that's fine. However, if it's funded by NZ rugby, somebody should have to explain that investment.

If it's NZRU money, how is itr any different to paying James Haskell, Tyler Ardron etc? Playing Super rugby here is going to be as beneficial - if not moreso - to a guys' development as being in an academy. At least if a guy has been in an academy, someone has thought at some stage that they might play for NZ.
