If you haven't discovered the excellent FB page NPC Rugby History (https://www.facebook.com/npcrugby/) or don't FB at all you are missing some great old clips the remind you of the difference between old school rugby and the current pro game.
I had to make this thread just to post this...
Fats, Lomu, Jim Coe, Errol Brain, a young (and thin) looking Merts for the losing side and some fine rucking.
jeez Mehrts made a tackle

Maybe I should change the thread title to 'Let's watch Canterbury get beaten'
It would be a very short thread
But ever so popular

1982: Canterbury 16 Wellington 12
"That was the famous try by Wayne Smith when he ran at that curious angle. He ran and Paul Quinn chased him. Quinn was a former Canterbury player and Wellington captain so there was quite a bit on it but to no avail and they took the shield. That was one of the great ones." -

Up to that point I had paid no attention to rugby, but for some reason I was listening to the commentary on the transistor while I was playing in the back yard. I dont remember his exact words but the commentator's excitement as Smith kept running has stayed with me. Couldn't wait to watch the game on telly later that day. I have been a rugby tragic ever since.

@nepia if you hadnt watched him play and looking at his record alone you'd not likely have too many issues with him....126 games for the Crusaders during thier long period of dominance with 290 points (I assume) almost 60 tries, 14 tests, 9 tries (not a bad strike rate)
It's not a great strike rate for any of our back 3 in that era is it?
-
-
Well yes, out of Caleb Ralph, Glen Osbourne, Jonah, Goldie & Cully, Ralph does have the lowest strike rate, but isnt alot bewteen Ralph, Oz and Lomu...57.1%, 57.8% & 58.7% respectively.
Goldie & Cully are way ahead on 73.3% & 76.6% respectively.
Joe Rok is 67.7%, while Savea is 85.2% and Rieko is currently 95.6%
-
@taniwharugby yeah I have a funny feeling most of them were close to a hundy strike rate in their first 20 tests maybe? Probably wrong.

@bones well Cully got 7 in his first 2 so he was well ahead
Obviously of all those names, Ralph also played by far the least number of games for the ABs too.
but the only one who went on to shag royalty
