If he's just punching air, why would you send him off for that?

Rubbish. The ref and TMO clearly saw it because they disallowed the try.
If they saw it then red card...but they didn't and the TMO didn't either.

I never said he should be sent off. An attempted punch is foul play and enough to rule out a try scored.

Why was he offside? I didn't think there was an offside line formed.

Yeah, I know...and might agree..but thats not what they ruled.
