Hamilton BHS pulled out of the Chiefs Cup because they are usually just playing the same teams they will meet in the Super 8, and Chiefs Top 4 playoffs. Last year Ham BHS played Rotorua BHS 3 times (Chiefs Cup round robin and final, Super 8).
So they are playing other Hamilton schools but these games aren't always competitive. I went to watch Hamilton BHS play St Johns on Sat. Hamilton won 79-0. This Sat's game against St Peters Cambridge will be closer.
There is now a University of Waikato Chiefs Secondary Schools Competition featuring other teams from the region. That has replaced the old Chiefs Cup.

@bovidae I see they've split a Chiefs Trophy competition from a Chiefs Cup competition (bottom of the page). Is that because the 6 schools in the Trophy competition would be hammered by Wesley, Rotorua BHS, FDMC and Tauranga if they were in the same comp?

There was a Chiefs Cup, Trophy and Bowl last year. The 4 teams in the Cup are definitely the strongest of the remaining teams.

St John's has a very green team this year after a run of good players. They were within minutes of beating HBHS only a couple of years' back. That's a big drop for them.
-
This game was played at St Johns in wet and muddy conditions so that was a decent scoreline from an almost completely new HBHS team (only 5-6 left from last year). When these teams played there a few years back St Johns had a weapon on the wing (Siave Seti) and he scored a couple of tries.
As to the game you mentioned (Chiefs Top 4 qualifier), that was a game St Johns should have won but chose to kick to the corner instead of attempting a penalty to draw the game and win on countback. St Johns did bring their own ref that day though.
-
Pretty sure St John's would have lost on count-back (if memory serves it was based on position in any competition they both played in, not the normal first try, so Chiefs Cup). In any case the aim was to beat HBHS, not qualify for Top 4.
No Waikato team has beaten HBHS for a very long time. The psychological benefits of that would be immense. Qualifying for Top 4 only to get smashed next round, less so.
Siave was indeed a beast, but the best guy in that team was Josh Kaho, who is currently making NZ age grade teams.

the Westlake vs WBHS was WBHS 3rd in 8 days, and only were trailing 22-12 about 10 into the 2nd spell....still not a fan of them playing in this comp, they don't have all the best players making themselves available for the team as the travel factor is an issue.

Would Northland have enough schools to have their own comp and provide competitive games?
The NH comp isn't very strong so having a combined school comp north of the bridge makes sense. I know in the Chiefs region some schools meet at a venue midway between the school locations to minimise travel.
-
@bovidae TBH I am not sure...I know traditionally it was a strong comp, but I guess that included Kaitaia, BOI, Dargaville (with Kaitaia slightly worse travel times to games) which still means some travel.
That said, I know in school boy stuff, Northland schools have always struggled v Auckland ones.

They use to have the winner of the northland schools comp play winner of north harbour one before then winner of that went on to play the Auckland ones. I recall one year Westlake beat Whangarei by about 50 points and then a week later westlake went down by about the same margin vs the top Auckland team. It showed a real difference between the 3 comps

Quite surprised at how well Takapuna Grammer are going so far this year in the harbour comp. Its out local school and they aren't really known for their rugby. 4/4 (including a win over Rosmini) and only unbeaten side along with Westlake (my old school). Will def try and catch the game between them in the next few weeks.
