Hamilton and Rotorua were both unbeaten going into last Sat's game too. Rotorua looks to be a good team and has some size - their backs were much bigger than Hamilton's.
I'll be at the Hamilton-Napier game so will record the Rotorua-Hastings game.

NZ Rugby announce Secondary School Rugby Review
New Zealand Rugby (NZR) announced today it will conduct a review of Secondary School Rugby in New Zealand and is inviting the rugby community to provide submissions. An independent project team made up of representatives from across the New Zealand rugby spectrum will carry out the review process which involves consultation with schools, rugby clubs and Provincial Unions. New Zealand Rugby’s Head of Participation and Development Steve Lancaster said including the rugby community in the review process is an important part of NZR’s commitment to deliver a world-leading secondary school rugby system. "We see this review process as a collaborative effort with the rugby community and we are encouraging those with a view to share that with us via the online submission process. "Retaining teenagers is a challenge for us and there is work to be done by everyone in the rugby community to ensure they are provided with open, inclusive and fun environments and formats of the game that are relevant to them." Lancaster said a key driver of the review was to ensure that there was a successful model for secondary school rugby throughout New Zealand in which boys and girls can both participate and perform. "Performance rugby is an increasingly important area of secondary school sport in New Zealand and we are producing fantastic rugby players through our school system. Finding a healthy balance in this environment is important and a growing challenge. "Of equal importance is the participation side of school rugby and how we can provide teenagers with enjoyable experiences that will carry long after their school years." Lancaster said the review was timely given the significant growth in women’s and girl’s rugby and the need to ensure secondary schools rugby was equipped to manage and enhance this growth. "Many of the challenges and opportunities we see in secondary school rugby aren’t unique to the boys’ side of the game, however, there’s a need to ensure there are sustainable competitions and pathways in place for girl’s rugby in schools. "The review will also look at how the completed 2017 Respect and Responsibility Review can be implemented in secondary school rugby to ensure we are building a culture on the foundation of respect and inclusion." The terms of reference are publicly available and can be viewed here: http://www.nzrugby.co.nz/what-we-do/secondary-school-rugby-review

Super 8 game today:
Hamilton BHS 29
Napier BHS 15The match was much closer than the final score (HT: 7-7) as Hamilton got a converted try in the final minute. I said Rotorua looked big but the Napier team dwarfed them, particularly their front row and centre. A good game to watch though.

Cambridge High School 3-20 Hamilton v Hamilton Boys High School Black (Tricolor Trophy)
This is the 3rd XV, which highlights the disparity in Waikato school rugby.
Not really the Third XV if I understand correctly.
HBHS field a firsts who play Super8. Their seconds for that are those they are grooming for firsts -- younger kids mostly.
The "thirds" are older students who aren't really in line for 1sts, or don't want the travel etc. They are very experienced and big, if a trifle unfit.
I'm pretty sure I've seen boys in that team with caps. They're much more like their second best team.
I'm happy to be corrected.
Given that HBHS is quite possibly the best school team on the planet over the long term, I'd expect their second teams to be quite good.
Also, aren't Cambridge fairly rubbish now, after a few years of being good?
There IS a huge gap, because HBHS is bigger than all the surrounding schools (by far), then strips all the best boys out of the whole region. But not quite that big.

Got a couple of guys in our Te Rapa A team from one of last years HBHS Third XV's. Damn good players. Have been nominated but will probably miss out on Waikato Under 19's. Tall and lanky, need more weight. The only Div 1 player to make Waikato Under 19's last year was told to move to tech from Suburbs so probably a good thing.
One thing I have heard which is stupid is that Fraser High is getting no help from Fraser Tech in regards to a pathway. Fraser High coach has wanted to put an Under 19 team in at the annual U19 ten aside tournament at Leamington and got no help. Our halfback who played under him said he is keen to get those fraser high kids in a Te Rapa team this year so I said go for it.
I think like every other prem club Fraser goes shopping at HBHS and then St Pauls and St Peters for their future prem players.

Yes, mainly year 13 students. They'll play the colts in a few weeks so that will give an indication of the relative strengths of both teams.

Their best years were when the Jacobson brothers were there. St Peters has usually been stronger.

Posted on the magpies schools post by accident the other day and then again today but here it is....

Huge game in the North Harbour schools comp this weekend with Takapuna Grammer hosting Westlake.
Both teams unbeaten sitting locked on 54 points each on the standings with the 3rd place team back on 33 points.
They met earlier in the season and had a 27 - 27 draw. Hopefully a cracking game. May be the case of who turns up best after a 3 week break for school holidays
So game was today and Westlake won a tough but really good game of rugby 21-16. Think was 13-6 half time to Westlake and got to 13-11 before Westlake scored an unconverted try and then snapped a nice drop goal to push it out of the converted try range. Very smart. Taka got a late try to narrow the gap but Westlake regained ball from kickoff and closed out the game.
