Doull has a point, Aus are far from the only team that has done this. The English "shining" the ball on the zips on their pants, players using mints to shine the ball etc.
This seems more blatent and they've been caught red handed, but it's a part of the game that has been there since the start.
If they wany to crack down on it then they need to start consistently handing out serious punishments for all forms of tampering.
Some of the outrage I have seen is a little over the top. It's cheating - Smith should be sacked as captain and others should be banned for a few games. It's not one of cricket's darkest days though. Faf Du Plessis has done a similar thing and there is little outrage. Obviously his actions weren't as premeditated but he still denied it after being caught red handed. Definitely the players shouldn't be banned by the ICC for more than a couple of games. What CA does is up to them.

I am struggling to generate much outrage tbh
-
If the captain of an international sporting team conspiracing to cheat with 3 or 4 other team mates ( and likely the coach too) doesn’t cause outrage for you I’m not sure what can
-
Only so many threads to spread the outrage over? 🎣

Child abuse, inheritance taxes. 2 examples off the bat

There is a difference between shining a ball and damaging it in order to artificially produce reverse swing.

@baron-silas-greenback if that's the bar this sort of thing wouldn't make the top hundred... or even top thousand depending on how itemized you got. Almost worth not even posting about.
Unless you're in a sports forum of course

Wrong forum then, definitely the wrong thread

Except it was asked what outraged me. I answered. I think a lot of people just see it is an Australian so dial up the faux outrage to maximum. Similar things have been done in he past. Nowhere near this level of vitriol.
Ban the culprits for a few games in line with past transgressions and move on. Perhaps sack Smith as captain. -

You wondered. I informed .

@baron-silas-greenback you might not be outraged but this is going to forever be a black mark on Steve Smith's career.

Sure it will. Partly because of what he did, but mostly because it was an Aussie that did it. And it happened in a high profile and contentious series
Other captains have ball tampered. ..can you remember them all. I can't
Aussies are outraged out of embarrassment. ... everyone else just loves kicking Aussie cricketers. Smells like a lynch mob... -

Faf defended the lolly charge but admitted to trying to damage the ball by rubbing it against his zipper.

England also did that.

@baron-silas-greenback Agreed.
Part of the 'Aussie that did it' factor is the status that cricket has in Australia (and therefore the Australian cricket captain has) and the status that Australia has in the cricketing world.
As the captain of Australia you should know all of this. Baggy green, Don Bradman etc etc.
So it is hard to have any sympathy for Smith.
Its comparable to the outrage an All Black captain would receive who did something vs an Argie rugby captain who did the same thing. The AB captain would receive much more outrage I would imagine.

It's pretty devastating as a lifelong Aussie cricket fan. And it's unprecedented.
The Aussie team I grew up with played the game hard, but within the rules of the game. You can talk about sledging (or even underarm) and while you can get mired in an ethical argument, there were never any attempts to break the rules of the game in an orchestrated way.
While I may not have believed it a week ago, it's clear this team is broken. It was broken the moment the 'leadership group' had a conversation about breaking the laws of the game, let alone when they actually decided to do it.
Now everyone may do it, maybe. Certainly ball tampering itself is hardly unprecedented. But this feels different. Maybe it's the planning, or the way it all unfolded. Whatever it is it will take a long time to recover from.
It's also such a hard situation to deal with because it's really difficult to draw parallels to other sports. It's an issue so unique to cricket.
It's clear the team has totally lost it's compass. I think most of the blame should fall on Lehmann, for creating the environment where this stuff (and the sledging etc) can take place. But obviously Smith and Warner need to go as well.
The whole thing just sucks.
-
What must really suck for all Aussie fans is the 2 guys most at fault with how these team conducts itself are also your 2 best players, Smith and Warner pretty much hold your batting side together.
Lose them and your screwed.
It would be like the Black Caps losing Williamson and Taylor. -
We won't fundamentally lose them, though. They will both serve a ban, but they will be back.
And at this stage I care so little about winning and losing. We need culture change, and in a way this could prove to be a blessing in the long run. New captain, new coach, new culture. Results are secondary... for now.

If we're all going to be extra outraged about this, then we should expect the ICC to change the laws and deal out far harsher punishments for any and all ball tampering.
Otherwise, hand out the usual 1 match ban and move on.

Would the 'outrage' be different if it was the Pakistanis?
