Black Caps vs Pakistan Series

@Chris-B yup agree with that lineup, it picks itself really. Just wicket keeper the unknown.
-
Rossco needs to be a floater or a hitter depending on the situation. Same with Kane to an extent.
The problem with Kane at 1,2 or 3 is momentum. I'd prefer him used if we lose 2 wickets early on, to consolidate. One of Kane or Rossco becomes the nurdler depending on situation.
We need to have two cracks at an early explosive partnership, so Guppy, Munro and CDG unless the first two get away, then just bring in a support player rather than a slogger.Edit: what I'm getting at is flexibility. I don't think we use it enough, especially when playing our two top batsmen that have full skill sets

No-one covers themselves in glory and the guys with the IPL chequebooks aren't impressed either.
Boult, Southee and Santner pick up contracts, but Tim and Mitch are at bargain basement prices.
Tim gets $156K - less than for example Australian quicks Ben Dwarshius, Jason Berendorff and Nathan Coulter-Nile.
Santner gets $78K.
Trent gets $343K.
So - just seven NZers picked up out of 24 who applied.
Nobody getting hugely rich overnight.
Dan Vettori bought BMac, Timmy and CdGh.
Flem bought Santner.
-
Wow, did we make a mess of that, from selection to performance. Terrible fielding / catching, the attitude with the batting was all wrong from the start.
Even the umpiring was shit. That we had to use a review for a clear caught behind was a shocker (yes that is what reviews are for for but that was so obvious), I believe that if the ball touches the ground then it is not "on the full" and therefor not out, but the precedent was set long ago. The no ball call on Ish was shit too. Having to bowl a free hit after it beggars belief.
Flush that whole match.

Ferguson dropped, KItchen still there (WTF?), and Blundell is the wicketkeeper.
Black Caps Twenty20 squad for Australia:
Kane Williamson (captain), Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Tom Bruce, Ross Taylor, Anaru Kitchen, Tom Blundell, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Seth Rance, Ben Wheeler, Trent Boult, Ish Sodhi.

What am I missing with Kitchen? The guy has a batting average in domestic T20 of 20.01 and four half tons. So at that level he score one every 25 bats ( he's obviously a specialist batsman )
Also he's 33.
Can someone please tell me what the fuck he's doing in the Black Caps?

He's old. Larsen likes selecting old guys.
He's been a good FC and List A player, his T20 selection is strange. Not even had good recent seasons obscured by a bad career record.

It's just odd. Not like his strike rate is incredible either and he's actually even older than Ross Taylor.

I have no idea what they're doing with Kitchen. Waste of space.
Dropping Ferguson is also really disappointing, he's got good first class numbers and is really starting to find his feet at international level. I want him playing as much as possible to continue his development.

We've had periods in the past where we've had to select some pretty damn ordinary players ( far too many to name ) but in the era we're in I expect every player called up to either be extremely young and promising or have an excellent domestic record. Kitchen ticks neither of these boxes.

Who is one of our best batsmen ever and doesn't get selected in the T20 team in spite of being able to up a strike rate better than the captain.
Ross seemed to get a rough decision yesterday as well, just when he was about to save the day (I don't have any pictures of white knights handy). I think the snicko "could have been anything" as we have heard before from Mr Wrong (apologies that is Llong and it was a hotspot) but my grudges will remain. -
I'll tell you all a little story. Larsen was in Hamilton for the ND-Otago T20 game on Dec 23 to watch a particular player. That player was obviously Kitchen as he was named in the NZ T20 squad the following day.
Kitchen's match stats were 3-0-38-1 and 2 (5) batting at 5.
Who the hell knows what Larsen saw in that game to convince him KItchen was of international quality.
Oh, as a comparison Devcich got 42 (21) and 3-0-12-4 in the same match.

Moving forward, Kane shouldn't be there. Rest him from the T20 squad and let him focus on his two better formats. Taylor should bat at 3 seeing as they're now happy with him and he's hardly going to burn out playing a handful of T20s in the twilight of his career so let the guy play. Bruce appears to have a future and maybe they should play Nicholls and give him the gloves. That's the top 5 sorted including a keeper and a bowling option in Munro. CDGH is a lock and Anderson also comes in to create a potentially devastating middle order. I don't think Santner has the batting to be at 8 in this format and I want another hitter there so I'd pick Wheeler but he'd need to take the new ball also and do a job as he's followed by - in no particular order -
Santner, Sodhi and one strike bowler in Boult, Southee or Henry. At a pinch you could bat Henry at 8 as he's able to hit a long ball, and play Boult or Southee as well. I think an XI along those lines is well balanced and bats really deep with plenty of bowling. -
My team would be
Munro
Guptill
Williamson
Bruce
Taylor
Seifert
Dr Grandehomme
Santner
Sodhi
Boult
SoutheeAnderson to replace Bruce when fit.

So Bruce’s place is secure then!

@shark Don't think Henry is part of the T20 equation - he struggles to bowl at the death in ODIs because consistent line and length is predictable and eminently sloggable.
I think Santner's got more to offer with the bat than he's shown so far. It's a bit of a thankless task batting at 7/8 in a T20 because you're often going to come in and have to face about five balls and swing away. You can do a good job by scoring 12 runs, but no-one's going to remember it.

Keeping our powder dry for the Aussie and Poms aye....
A few concerning aspects with selections and execution of a game plan. We looked a little lost out there which is surprising given over the last couple of years we have played pretty assured.
Looking forward to the upcoming series.

He's 34 in March. Since when is that not the twilight period of a NZ batsman's career??
