ABs vs Kangaroos?

According to the article below, NZR have confirmed the talks.
To me, it's just an awful money grab. I'd not watch it.
From what I've seen on social media, the scrums would be league-scrums. Eight tackle rolling mauls with no play the ball. After eighth drive team must kick. No line-outs.
.
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/rugby/news/article.cfm?c_id=80&objectid=12343030All the article says is they've been approached and haven't dismissed it out of hand.
The game itself would be a joke. No lineouts because league doesn't have locks, no rucks, no mauls, no scrums because they'd have half of them in traction after the first. At best it would be Brumby ball. Who the fuck wants to watch that?

And depowering scrums for something like this is just the reality for safety, unless they drafted some Wallaby props.
@Kirwan said in ABs vs Kangaroos?:
As for the nancys worrying about injuries, Rugby is a contact sport. League is a contact sport.
Changing your tune? Fuck them leagueys, they should man up! Nancys
Just not entertaining to watch broken necks

i find the idea pretty cridgeworthy
if the AB's have an extra game in them let them go and play for the Mitre 10 Cup teams

I expect this more about generating revenue to cover lost income. Happy to seen some variety in how they do that (instead of 100 Bledisloe Cup games a year)

I dont really care either way, and if they are playing a game more resembling league than rugby, I expect other players come (back) into reckoning:
Akira, Frizzel, Aumua, Laumape et al
-
It's a terrible idea, will be horrible to watch.
But if the top guys play, anyone who says they won't tune in is kidding themselves.
As if you wouldn't settle in with a few beers to watch the AB's battle it out at any sport with these blokes. Rugby, league, touch, darts, netball, decathlon, even synchronised swimming, I'd watch any of these in a heartbeat.

For safety's sake it would have to be league(ish) - everything else would be too dangerous to simply ask them to play at that level.

This is a bad idea. The problem with hybrid rules is that it can never be perfectly fair and will invariably favour one code more. Imagine if the ABs lost to the Kangaroos in a game where the rules favoured league, we won't hear the end of it. If they do insist on playing this ridiculous game, then it has to be one half under league rules and the other half under union rules (union scrums excluded) like it was done before.

cant see this posted elsewhere, but...
Oh do just fuck off.
If the league fluffybunnies want to play us then just give up the experiment and come and play rugby.

And those hybrid games were very one-sided for each half, as expected, when the rules were favouring either rugby or RL. Wigan did better than St Helens in the rugby halves.
If there are no lineouts and uncontested scrums then it's not rugby so a waste of time.

@ACT-Crusader I remember watching that game too. Bath were considered an expansive rugby team during that era. Compared to the other English clubs obviously.

They were great matches to mull over and watch.
And then mull over.
All with adult beverages obviously.

@Bovidae I found footage of a Bath v Wigan game that I remember watching back in 96
Bath showing all the benefits of a year in professionalism...

They were a bit of a farce at times but fun to watch and helped break down some of the absurd RL/RU barriers at the time.
Yonks ago, I was at a some dinner or lunch event with a Wigan prop who played in both games (Terry O'Connor?). Great bloke IIRC.
He said after the return Union game at Bath's ground, any thought that RU was a bunch of fat boys pushing against each other vanished within 5 minutes. Said that even though Bath were holding back and there were uncontested scrums, he had never been so physically exhausted. Added that Wigan were taken aback at how physically tough RU forward play actually was.
