On the artificial chants in general.
The Hurricanes.
Back in 1996, new team .... they came up with jingle. Was a radio ad for few months leading up to the inaugural comp.
That's fine. But they play it over PA as a fan chant. I'm no musical composer, but it is technically a terrible chant.
Hurricaaaaaaaanes (getting higher).
Hurricaaaaaaaanes (getting lower).
That's fine for a professional singer, That's fine over the PA, people will join in as long as they're not the loudest.The reason this doesn't work, the part you sing/shout the loudest the "caaaaaaaanes" part, actually takes some singing ability. Is techincally reasonable difficult.
If in 1996 the fans had been left to their own devices. Undoubtedly the "Weeeeeeeelllllington" chant would have been adopted as "Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuricaaaanes". A tried and true, organic, easy to sing chant requiring no prompting from Happy FM.

once he saw the relatively inexperienced (combination wise )back 3 named , he leaned towards this 10 12 combo to pepper them with kicks.
if they started with bb and dagg in the back 3 he may have started teo .......just a hunch

I saw Hanson at their peak. I'd like to believe they sucked hard but I was dragged to the show against my will and got obliterated pre-show and don't remember a thing. Anyway we all love Dave Dobbin and the Finns but the only music that should be played at international rugby test matches is hard metal and then only before the match, after the match, maybe during halftime break, but NEVER during the actual game itself.

Why play music when fans are at their loudest?!when your team has scored a try.
Pre DJs ruining rugby for sensible folk like me. Team scores a try, you cheer like mad. As they come back to halfway to receive the kickoff, the actual try scorer gets a second more local cheer and clap and encouragement from the section of the crowd he is positioned near to (like a bowler retuning to field at fine leg after taking a wicket).
Now. We bop our heads to Blur's 'Song 2' while the try scorer is probably still looking for opposition heads to pat.
My anecdote I've repeated a few times. 1996 or 97 at Atletic Park. Canes v Free State in S12. Mother of all comebacks in progress by the Canes and Cullen scores a wonder try. The crowd is going off, big time. Then DJ cuts in with his hurricane jingle as mentioned above. Now Athletic Park was an old school ground not set up with musical OA system, instead their are huge speakers on the grass touchline facing the stands. The acoustics were still in their infancy ....... it was fucking LOUD, literally could not hear yourself shouting. So every one stopped.
It went in order:
- Try.
- Crowd going off.
- LOUD jingle.
- Jingle finishes, everyone had stopped yelling. You could hear a pin drop.
- 30 seconds of nervous, self conscious silence.
- Then the first of the giggles started .....

Problem for Gatland was that his squad doesn't contain any real answers for where the Lions were beaten - the close pitched gainline battle. There aren't mad dog loosies, locks or hookers on tour. No Teagues, no Johnstons, no Woods/Moores. That's what he needed to answer the ABs close quarters, quick recycle ruck game.
Instead he's reacted with what he's got: Warburton and Itoje, with Lawes and Stander on the bench. Not sure it will do the trick. And it probably nullifies the one real advantage the lions had in the 1st test: the lineout.
I reckon there was a strong argument to play O'Brien and Tipuric together. High workrate in the tight and loose. Hard at the ball when needed and could've made the ABs pick and go game harder to generate quick ball.
Itoje is growing into that role IMO but has to mature as a player. Come 4 years against the Boks he could be a real handful.

@Salacious-Crumb The Chiefs used to use Motorhead's "The Game" as the players ran out.
The reliance on music at stadiums to generate atmosphere has always annoyed me. But not as much as the Mexican wave at a rugby game. There were some 20-something muppets in Rotorua trying to start one near the end of the match. At an T20 or ODI cricket game, maybe, but at the rugby - fuck right off!!

Music over the PA should only be played if it enhances the atmosphere. At the sevens people would actually sing along to the pop songs over the PA. The music worked in that sense. However, most often the music is just a distraction. It should be limited to perhaps a distinctive team song pre-game.
There was actually one point in the first test when there was some chanting and a song came on and the crowd stopped immediately.
