@Duluth I'm quite sure that many female/young viewers might want the extra detail, too. 😉

@Duluth that 1014 show was great. Just proper analysis of what’s going on. Learned a lot watching it.

All comes down to money in the end.
Would take a big investment of time and resources to turn around an analysis driven show in quick order.
Those 1014 guys did it themselves and it wasn’t quick. Also wasn’t sustainable.
Maybe an early week show with some talk points from the weekend, what the results mean towards the end game, what is coming up, who might be rested, who got injured etc
A play analysis show mid week. Pick up on new plays/tactics. What is working for teams and where they might be going wrong. Could also update the injury info and provide some season stats to pump players and create interest.
Trying to cover all of that stuff and failing because the focus is on sound bites and opinions isn’t working. If they did those other shows then there is room for the opinion stuff as a separate show.
Also more package pieces on players and coaches would be welcome. Where they’ve come from, an interview etc

The problem with this show is just as much due to the hosts and guests as with the content. Wilson is the only main host who adds some value, and even he can't save it. I watched it briefly for the second time this year when Stanway was hosting and Bates was one of the guests. I swear he was only there to make JK look intelligent.

Although it wasn't Breakdown, I really enjoyed the after game of the Canes /Tahs last night, thought the interviews with Holland and Darren Coleman in particular was good, Coleman/Wilson and Perenara were discussing tastics and what's going worng for Tahs in a real interetsing (for me anyway) way, no smartarse just talking about what was going wrong etc. Enjoyed whole thing really.

And the rest of the world has spotted what a dick Jeff Wilson was on this week’s Breakdown. His arrogance was inappropriate for a former All Black and disrespectful of the Old Foe and lots of other teams who will be giving their all to try and win the World Cup, include the host nation France who the ABs will face next Friday.

I hope he issues a public apology as soon as possible. Otherwise Sky should consider taking him off air.

@sparky I watched it , what did he say? I didn't notice him say anything controversial.
Did enjoy listening to Hansen, and his take on Wallabies, though I think he was just assuring Rancid and a few other posters he didn't actually coach Wallabies, and he would be telling Foster how Wallabies saw they needed to prep against French. Actually thought the most interesting thing he said was about Wallabies missing having leadership group as such .

Take a deep breath, Helen Lovejoy. You want a public apology for that? Good grief.

@Smudge I’m sure those quotes will go up in the team room of every team the ABs play in the World cup. Idiotic stuff from Wilson and Sky. No awareness of why some people dislike NZ Rugby arogance.

@sparky I understand your point, but I doubt any team will get any extra motivation from what an ex AB says on a rugby programme. I must admit to watching Breakdown without being a huge fan (I just watch rugby stuff anywhere), bit by christ I watched a lot of them while in living in Aussie, and never once thought 'gee the ABs will get fired up after that comment'. I think if a coach or present player says something you can use, but I doubt whether all this put on dressing room wall is really anything. We get Stuart Barnes, etc saying stuff rubbishing ABs (and plenty more) I would assume ABs wouldn't even read it and if did, would shrug shoulders. I used to laugh when mates would say that about Kearnsie, Marto ,Kafe, Harrison etc in Aus, it's their opinion, were paid to give it and if it's what players use to get fired up, then players got probkems.

Shock horror. Sports show commercial TV panel features provocative commentary from former player. What do you think these guys are paid to do, for goodness sake? If they turned up in tweed jackets, sagely nodding and sounding reasonable and measured, how do you think the ratings would go? These players turned pundits are paid to have strong opinions and express them emphatically with the intention of appalling half the audience and enthralling the other half. That’s what the media is for. It’s an attention-generating business. Your job as a sports broadcaster is to generate engagement so that the company you work for can sell maximum eyeballs to advertisers at the highest yield. And you do that by making big statements that get shared through tweets like Andy Goode’s.

@His-Bobness it would be nice if they were paid to provide some actual analysis, or asked some hard questions of the ABs. Even if you're cynical and think the former too hard for the masses, the latter should generate some attention.

@reprobate There are plenty of YouTube experts who provide more granular analysis, but the fact is that the vast majority of punters just want their prejudices confirmed, which is the nature of mass media markets everywhere (not just NZ, by the way). Agree, though, that NZ’s ‘official’ rugby media is a tad too close to the people who run the game. I think that’s even more true of the Aotearoa rugby pod, where the bench of Parsons and Hall, as contemporaries of the current generation of players, are really unable to offer frank and fearless objective opinion and analysis.

In Australia, a lot of the commentators also see it almost as their duty to talk the Wallabies up and be part of the corporate marketing machine for the ARU. In the case here, though, that’s a reflection of the hugely competitive sporting market in the winter codes and the fact that union has been on the slide for years. Having said that, I do think Nine’s Stan has improved the coverage than when it was under the miserable Murdoch Fox umbrella.

The economics of media is against any significant change in sports coverage. Legacy media’s business model got busted two decades ago by the internet. Since then, the old Chinese walls between ownership, advertising and editorial have broken down. Media ‘properties’ have largely become allied to the commercial imperatives of owners and advertisers. Independent analysis and journalism becomes a fringe activity outside the mainstream.

It’s analogous to the trajectory of neoliberal capitalism for the last 30 to 40 years. Rugby itself is being hollowed out by big money seeking short-term returns. Either way, the public suffers.

There are. But it ain’t sensible to lower to their level.

The respect the All Blacks have built internationally over years is for being classy (speaking humbly in interviews, respecting opponents, signing lots of autographs with kids etc.).

There are plenty of sporting sides that have won more titles like the Aussie League team or the Aussie Cricket team or the New England Patriots under Brady.

The All Blacks used to win but they weren’t at all cocky about it.

Jeff Wilson has done huge damage to the NZ Rugby brand. He should leave the arrogant shit and disrespecting opponents to the guys like Phil Kearns.
