Bench Press challenge...

@Magpie_in_aus ha ha somewhat in hiatus with all this pandemic guff. I've also dropped down to 95kg and am aiming at low 90s. So I know I've lost a bit of muscle as well as the fat. Reckon 130kg would be a max rep at the moment
I might have to dust off the cobwebs and try a max rep too. Iām hoping that repping push ups with a couple of 20kg plates on my back and various other calisthenics will crossover nicely.

@Hooroo 145kg. That held constant between 105-113kg or so. Although I did change from a narrow to a wide grip a couple of years ago. That feels a lot more solid but I've got a lot more work to be done on form
especially how you revert to type under a heavy load and all the cues go out the window to just shift that weight!

That's serious weight. Id be happy to bench my own weight which I'm not a million miles from doing I guess (Especially if I keep losing weight at a healthy (read: Slow) rate).
In saying that, I also don't want to go heavy on the weights as it's about improving golf rather than getting stronger and there has to be a limit that counter activates the golf at some stage.
My max at the moment is only calculated by trainer based on what I do in our sessions. I think it was 110? or 108 maybe based on doing 3 unassisted reps at 100kg at the end of the weight session.

@Hooroo I always worked towards repping a hundy. Then just increased the reps and sets. I am of a similar mind about not redlining much if at all. I know most of my injury related fail points and I'm not in a rush to find more lol. Cool you are seeing the benefit in your golfing!

OK, that has freaked me out a little. What sort of injuries?? If I injure myself at the gym doing weights (Too heavy or incorrectly) I will be livid.

Was listening to third phase podcast (limas one) interviewing will genia. His 1RM bench was 172.5

Would that be twice his own weight?

I always wonder what sort of weight prime ( hahaha copyright Frans Botha ) Jonah could lift given how easily he manhandled some pretty big roosters in their own right.

Put on the spot at a mates crossfit type boxing gym, I haven't benched in yonks but they said I looked in decent shape. fluffybunnies. Anyway managed to throw up one rep of 130kg while doing my best to make it look easy ( which it wasn't ). I guess various types of pushups and variations and what have you have their advantages in terms of crossover. Was also wearing jeans and a shirt while doing said lift.
This was a few days ago and my shoulders are still sore as fuck......

That's heavy.
Is that your all time record as well (I have a feeling it isn't)?
I did my 1RMs with the trainer today after a month of only seeing the gym a couple of times. She was disappointed I didn't carry on through the Christmas break. (Please!!)
Bench was 110kg which is only a slight movement down
Biggest change was deadlift. 130kg and was a real struggle when my late last year PB was 3 comfortably enough at 140.
She also added in that machine where you are lying front forward and you pull the weight up into you (like a reverse bench press) That was rubbish as I thought it would be easier. I can't remember but I think 70 (could have been 60 though)
Stoked we did this early in year though as it sets the 2021 benchmark for myself.
She wants me to be able to do one chin up unassisted (I'm currently 126kg so a bit of a struggle)

I did 135kg back in the day but what is encouraging is I retained the strength through lots of "assistance" type exercises.....dips, diamond pushups, explosive push ups etc. Tire flips and rope climbs are a big part of it too. @Bones is a big fan of my videos.
Pretty sure @Paekakboyz and his short limbs has me beat on the bench. My South African mate can do 5 x 160kg which might put his 1RM at about 185-190 odd ? ( or more than most pro Rugby players ) Pretty scary seeing him do that in the flesh.

I marvel at 140kg being pressed as that is 3 big plates each side. Funning doing 105 or 110 when you have two bigs each side and then this little saucer size plate adding to it.

oooh haven't been any heavier than 110kg this year for bench. 145kg is my best, reckon I could have hit 147.5kg when we were doing our last block of training on bench. But I was nearly 15kg heavier then (lol) so I suspect 130ish is probably the best I'd manage. Plus I still get shoulder twinges and don't love bench enough to risk redlining.
@Hooroo triceps bro! reckon that is the 'secret' to faster gains on bench. Depends on what parts of the lift are being problematic but often improving tricep strength is the way to go. Getting your technique and breathing sorted is also super important.
Hitting 3 wheels feels pretty cool!

as I mentioned in my thread, bench has always been a weakness for me, and only starting back last year did I manage to get my bench over 100% of my body weight for the first time ever, am at about 120% now.
I have pushed another PB on my single RM for deads too, which is good.

I'm not aiming to improve as a target, the goal is improve my golf through doing controlled and directed exercise. While I do love doing the 1rm session once or twice a year, it is meaningless in terms of the result I want.
I'm hitting the ball much further now purely due to her research in what works best for golf power and balance.
