I was chatting with @Mokey on facebook around the time of the council election and was told off as I said I wasn't going to vote as I had no idea who any of them were or what they were pushing. (Matamata-Piako rather than Hamilton Council elections)
You can easily see how these mickey mouse types get in.

Can't recall the site but in the last local elections they'd surveyed all the folks standing asking for views on Fluoride and a range of other stuff. Agree 100% that voting for a person who "Wants to bring our community together and is passionate about people' tells you fuck all about their actual experience or views on stuff like this.

I am the same as you, I am a terrible local body constituent. I do think that the local papers do a poor job of covering them as well. I think the council should fund a pamphlet drop with just a blurb and policies for each candidate.
Worth the cost IMO

Or chuck it up on a website (which would be cheaper) and include the link on the enrollment forms.

@Baron-Silas-Greenback we got the profile blurb in our local election info but the missing part was policy position. Did anyone on TSF get any policy type info along with the "X likes walks on the beach and has 4 kids" stuff?
Policy info would make a big difference imo. Even if it meant my voting was more motivated by keeping numbnuts out!

@Baron-Silas-Greenback Auckland Council do a pamphlet drop.
I was seriously considering running for the local board at this years elections on precisely that basis.
I mean there is such an under-representation of white, middle-aged males someone has to stand up and be counted - right....
I wouldn't have bothered with billboards or social media or any of that expense, but reckoned I could write a pretty reasonable 100 word sales pitch Born, schooled and grew up in area - history in business chair of biggest commercial/industrial business district in NZ, bit of an expert on Unitary Plan, won Best article on TSF in 2011.....
Name recognition gets about 4 people in but then I reckon people decide based on those blurbs.
In the end I was launching a new business, was a bit tired of it all after nine years on a Board and then looked at the likely make up of the Local Board (majority ex Alliance) and the fact that as predominantly dormitory suburbs it would all be about swimming pools and cycle paths and thought nah. I actually wanted to be able to make a difference
I have tucked it away as a retirement option though. Worth $30k p.a.

These nutters are popping up all over the place standing in Dhb elections because decisions about fluoride are being taken out of the hands of local councils and given to Dhbs to lessen the risk of these cretins having a say . Unfortunately they are standing for election there now too.
Conspiracy theorists also say fluoride is the main ingredient in Prozac which is why governments want it and Hitlers first act when taking power was to fluoridate the water to make the population more docile. And we all know how docile the Germans were after he took over.Mrs Jegga has a lot to do with local councils and reckons for everyone that wants to do something for their local community there's two that are there for ego or are borderline nuts. Most get reelected on name recognition alone rather than anything particularly noticeable .
One way of getting people to pay attention to what these people get up to with your rates was an idea floated a few years ago of making councils put up on their website all their spending over $1000 so people could judge for themselves if they get value for money . I imagine people would be pretty ducked off if they knew where their money went , Len Brown super city were good for blowing cash on stuff like a $100000 curtain.
A while ago I put up Tim Shadbolts paper about running a council on a shoestring , he wrote it after he'd kept the rates increase to 1% which was less than the inflation rate at the time . Most of it was pretty sound basic stuff to be honest .

We got leaflets detailing each candidate, their policies etc for our Local Elections this year, I thought it would have been normal...obviously not.

I'm a big fan of Shadbolt. Purely for his personality. They guy could rule until he dies I reckon. Spend a 1/4mil on lights that don't work! No dramams mate, you're allowed a couple of slip ups.

Same here, some of the stuff like sending out any council pamphlets on the cheapest photo copied paper possible is so obvious. Missed the fuck up with the lights, he's definitely allowed a couple of fuckups though.
The guys 69 with a newborn kid, he was getting up a couple of times at night anyway I guess so not much will change there.
