Look, it's kinda stating the blatantly obvious, but if the only reason you are keeping the coach of the national rugby team in Australia is that you can't afford to replace him, then that is possibly the worst piece of governance of mainstream political sport that i have ever seen.
Which would be ignoring all the other issues they've created through shit governance and stewardship of the game.
I point you back to my previous comments regarding one DO for all of Western Sydney.

well yes, it's a tangled web of ineptitude.
This is rugby in Australia, not underwater hockey. It's backed by and school tie brigade and the associated money. Where has the money gone? Why are the unions broke? Why are casual players funding the unions rather than the other way around? Why are high performance appointments based on affordability rather than results? It's damn near criminal
-
@mariner4life because the old school ties are politically aligned and don't have to think for themselves. If you can get a job via networking the old school contracts, why do you need to think?
That's generalising but there are a scary number of these people in positions of influence.

Explains Clyne.

Is that a joke? I'd be furious that a donkey like Scott Johnson was appointed to oversee me. At least Chieka has won things as a coach.

I hope they got him cheaper than Scotland did.
He has seemingly leveraged a career off working with Henry and Hansen. -
Scott Johnson?
...
Scott .. ?
Johnson?
Bwahahahahahaha

No way that Cheika still stand for that is there? Surely he will walk. Surely.
Perhaps that's the ARU's cunning plan.

You've got to ask what's the point of the press conference?
I thought it was an excellent snapshot of Australian Rugby.
30 seconds of disorganised inept failed attempts at doing something,
then 1 minute of confirming that nothing has been done - but don't worry, it's all in hand. -

He has told us many times he is filthy rich and doesn't need the job.
Strange appointment unless it is more hands on than it appears. Surely there would be a better slate of candidates post-RWC (could even see some NZ candidates willing to take a DOR role there) and what can someone in that role achieve in ten months in time for RWC? Also what is Ben Whittikar's role now?
The most obvious spot to upgrade is the assistants.
-
@majorrage given he has life outside of rugby I think his bond with the players will keep him there. A resignation ( while justified) would be a bit of a betrayal to the lads I think.
Whatever opinion people have, he's always been pretty honest and straight forward, and internal rugby culture in a team is pretty special, we've all experienced that.
But it's a fucked up situation no matter how you dice it

This Cheika has an epic career outside the game narrative is getting a little bit silly. He has been a full time coach for over a decade I doubt you can just pick things up in an industry like that where you left off. He doth protest too much. I could only imagine how nauseating it would be if Ted mentioned he could walk into an easy six figures as headmaster at any school in the country anytime the press asked him a curly question.
That said Mike clearly is a real people person so I have no doubt there are a network of contacts ready to get him back into the game.
-
@rotated I don't think he's said it much.
And my extreme authority on his outside life comes from a thread sentence where someone may have said he'd made a few million in the rag trade, ergo in my world, he's sweet for income and choices. He'll pick up a club coaching gig quiksmart anyway.
I've a soft spot for krusty, the Irish loved him and he looks like a classic Aussie bloke who'd be a good mate.

It's official.
Cheika surives.
Scott Johnson appointed Director above Cheika.
