A couple of years ago Southee being injured would have been a massive "Oh fuck" moment. Now it's tinged with excitement at someone else getting a go to be honest.
yep, but unfortunately it will be someone else getting a go on a dustbowl, so they're unlikely to have enough success to displace him.
I expect 3 spinners with Wagner and Boult. If Neesham was fit, he would play ahead of one of the spinners.

Two huge surprises this week:
- Guptill failing against a red ball
- Neesham injured
The selectors couldn't possibly have seen those events coming.
I've also heard that they're going to be quite reliant on Williamson and to a lesser extent Taylor to look at getting some runs.

Arf!
I wonder how long the guy at cricinfo searched for the perfect picture to accompany that. He nail it.

So looks like the bowling "attack" is gonna be Boult, Wagner, Sodhi, Craig, Santner......
All I can say about that is I hope those three spinners can get every ounce of assistance from the conditions they possibly can. I hope Wagner can get the balance of strike bowler/workhorse right too.
Pretty strong tail though assuming the order is Santner/Watling, Craig, Sodhi, Wagner, Boult. Statistically likely that one or more will hang around for a pesky ( to the opposition ) tail enders innings.

My predictions:
For the thread;
Pages of people wondering why we play 3 spinners and don't play our 4 best seamers.
MN5 to put quotes around the word 'spinners', 'attack' once each page at least.
Posters to promote the idea of which ever of our spinning all rounders has the best series with the bat to open in place of Guptill.For the series;
We get absolutely pumped in first test, then gradually improve.
Our performance depends 80% on how well Kane and Ross go with the bat.
Sodhi to have a pretty good series with the bat at number 9 (I hope) judging on how well he's played spin in previous series. (If he lasts beyond the first test)
We need to win the toss!!! And then score runs.
Kohli won't know which of our spinners to target, as they're all so ripe, but will eventually settle on Sodhi. May hit him out of the series. -
@MN5 India have been up to their usual tricks again by providing a greentop in the practice game and then rolling out roads for the test series.
I think the key for Boult and Wagner will be using the old ball get to reverse swing as I doubt there will be much assistance for them at the start of the innings. Hopefully Sodhi and Santner can replicate their form in the T20 in India. As @Rapido says, winning the toss and batting for as long as possible will be our best hope to succeed.

May hit him out of the series. You left out the parts in which I'll whinge about Craig not being test standard and how I'll repeatedly point out that while Williamson is clearly our best batsman Taylor would be in any other era.
Also would be nice if Ryder sorted his head out cos a 3/4/5 axis of KW/Taylor/Ryder would be as good as any in todays game.

Excited about the series - keen to see how our trio of spinners goes, with the bat and the ball. All three are solid and while Satner has shown the most class Sohdi looks good with bat in hand. Craig is no chump either.
Rapido, reckon we'll have a sniff early on with Kohli and co going hard at our spinners - while he (and the top order) are great playing spin it only takes one fuck up and got em! I'm just hoping we see that scenario repeated... often... don't burst my bubble man!
Hopefully both our seamers can get some reverse swing happening and our bowling unit causes issues for the Indians.
I'm already burning incense at my altar of Kane and Rosco - may the runs flow. Batting runs, ain't nobody want those other runs!
Edit: Guppy make take runs of any description at the moment!!

Bro the fact you mention our "spinners" @rapido on the basis of their batting says it all
Surely Dan Vettori isn't too old to turn the arm over ?

I'm looking forward to having cricket on all night every night for the next little while - the timing is great if you're in NZ. Thankfully the better half enjoys her cricket too so shouldn't be a problem having it on
We have nothing to lose. India have been fucking dominant at home since around 2012, they doctor the shit out of their pitches but given what happened at the T20WC that could backfire on them if Santner and Sodhi settle in. I see old Harbhajan has said the same, that if India make the pitches too unplayable it can be a bit of a leveller.
I like our bowling lineup, and I think Wagner could provide a great point of difference. He's predictable but the Indians will need to have a plan on how to play the short stuff. If the pitch gets slow and low with the odd one keeping down that could prove to be a handful.
Not worried about Southee, he's done well in India before but that was under Bond. He's been cake ever since and TBH barely deserves a spot in the team. Hopefully whoever is paired with Boult can just keep it tidy - Southee was really undoing the pressure he was building against SA by serving up dross.
The toss is going to be fucking critical. If we can bat first and get 350+ then she's all on. Having a strong lower order will benefit us, as on the turning pitches a long innings is fairly unlikely, but a handful of guys making hay and getting 30 - 40 each could get us to something defendable. On that note I hope Guppy's instructions are to go hard in the first 10 before the ball gets old and starts turning sideways. A quickfire 60 or 80 from him against the new ball would be fucking invaluable.
Bring it on!
-
@MN5 Oi!! I did say batting AND bowling!! although I did expand more on the batting side of things...
I think they'll do well on both fronts - and Kane and Rosco can also bowl a bit of spin so we are rocking a 5-spinner attack!!
-
A couple of other points - Kane's average is 51, what a complete fucking legend, and Wagner is 6 wickets short of 100 in his 23rd test. No NZer has reached 100 wickets in 24 tests. That's an incredible effort, talk about maximising your talent through hard work. Average 29 now which is more then respectable.
-
@No-Quarter Yep, I'd have picked Wagner ahead of Southee for this test anyway, but Southee's injury solved that dilemma for the real selectors!

Guess I'm not watching this test.
fuck. somehow those cheaty fuckers rigged it, i just know it

Yeah becasue we have been a bastion of cricket tosses in tests.....
fuck, i had to check for myself. We've won the toss 11 times out of 29 tests in the last 3 years.
