Ah Jeepers, what a predicament!
Still quite a few to get and not much support left for Ravindra !
A terrible test from Mitch Santner, I think that might be it for test cricket for him……Matt Henry instead please
Conway might need to make way for Young as well.
I used to have high hopes for Young, but now I doubt he will be any better than Conway. Hopefully I am wrong.

We're paying $14 for the win; SL $1.08
So, yeah. We're relying on a miracle from Ajaz and WIll to hang around, and Rachin to work some magic.

Young gets nicked off a lot with those hands that go wandering he needs to cover 4th stump more.
Conway just is not fixing those technical issues that I mentioned about a year ago. Those issues are still being exploited by the opposition bowling analysts.
It is a worry they have not been addressed for 18 months now.
Until they do Conway is going to keep failing. -
Conways Blackfoot placement is non existent which makes him play either outside of the ball causing Lbws or getting bowled (that is why when he first came on to the scene he had a lot of inside edges.
It also causes him to play away from his body getting caught in the slips or caught in the covers as he has no balance or follow through.
And lastly he falls over to the offside when playing off his legs again Lbw or caught square on the onside.
All down to his Blackfoot which is just as important as your front foot to maintain balance, follow through and power in your shot.

This is very similar to Stokes at Headingly. Needed 75 runs, and got them in around 10 overs whilst Leach faced 17 balls and scored only one run. Much tougher batting conditions, but Rachin will need to do the same.
Patel/O'Rourke won't be able to last long in defence, and certainly won't be able to score unless it is off the edge.
No point throwing it away, but Ravindra needs to come out positively. If he gets out, so be it, but there is no point Ravindra ending not out in a defeat.

He needs to give Jeremy Coney a call I reckon

and over before their morning dilmah was ready

Well that is utterly shit.
Oh well, we were definitely competitive…..
MN5’s team for the next test
Latham
Young
KW
Ravindra
Mitchell
Blundell
Philips
Henry
Southee
Patel
O’RourkeConway and ( especially ) Santner need to go.
Young comes in for Conway more on promise than tangible results, 16 tests with no hundreds is certainly not ideal for a specialist batsman but Conways form and confidence is shot to pieces at the moment.
Henry for Santner is straightforward for me. As an “ all rounder” Santner essentially had four opportunities to impress and made a mess of all of them. I don’t see the need in replacing him with another bits and pieces part rounder in Bracewell and O’Rourke showed that pace bowlers can thrive on this wicket if they get it right.
It does mean the tail starts a bit earlier but Santner shat the bed there so no difference really, Henry is a capable hitter.
But the coaching stuff love Santner so he’ll probably get another go……and maybe a couple of recent 3 fers will be enough to keep his place.

@MN5 I completely agree re Santner (in tests), it also worries me that they will never have the balls to get rid of the captain. Carrying one non contributor is hard enough but 2 is impossible, and probably why we lost this test. We did get close and but for a couple of cm run out, might have sneaked it.

Same shit as the ABs. We are in quite the nadir for leadership in both of our major sports codes right now. Problems from the top of governance all the way down to the grass roots

In this test we had three in Southee, Conway and Santner. Everyone else had their moments. Blundell maybe a bit borderline with his batting returns but possibly tidy in terms of keeping, I didn’t watch enough of it.
The main issue for me was the batting, no one quite went on and converted a decent start into a great innings.

@mn5 Yes Conway too. I’m a bit more lenient on him in some futile hope that he reads the fern and @Chris ’s technique tips, then has a return to being as good as we know he can be.
Yes, re the batting all round.
Oh I completely agree re Conway. You don’t get 200 in a big game on debut overseas unless you have serious talent. He got good scores in the second test too.
I really hope he comes right.

Mathew Sinclair and Hamish Rutherford say hi! (although their scores were not overseas)

I don't think we should give up on Conway. He needs support and positivity and I think he'll come right. He has earned at least til Christmas. The upside potential is too great to discard now.
Santner (in tests) is a busted flush. Time to stop persevering.
My positions are not contradictory.
-
I'd bring in:
- Ish for Santner, but I gather he's not there, so... .... Bracewell, or the team bus driver? Not Henry, because:
- Henry for Southee
- Move Phillips up to six
My wider concern about Conway is the technical problems are undoubtedly known, but are (so far) unfixable against international class bowling...
Challenge if we swap Conway for Will Young, is that Chris is also right about Young fishing outside off stump. It'd be swapping one set of flaws for another...
-
Given we're pretty much out of the running for the WTC now (maybe we still have a very slim chance?), we may as well keep Conway in the team at least until we're back in NZ.
Then, if he hasn't perfomed we select someone else but not Young. Ideally we look to the future and find someone completely different but who that is I have no idea.
