you will rarely see a more perfect seam position than what James has served up year after year for more than 2 decades.

James Anderson’s last test starts tomorrow (in spite of the fact he took 7-40odd last week for Lancs), feels like it’s too soon but it had to happen sometime. Some lovely tributes pouring out of the woodwork, but jeez I’ll miss that grumpy bastard running in for England.

Hard to believe he was at the 2003 World Cup with the likes of Alec Stewart and Wasim Akram.

One of the young English guys set to debut was born 4 months after Anderson made his test debut.

Andersons longevity is absolutely extraordinary. He also went from being just a good fast bowler to a truly great one. One has to admire that. As Boult, Southee and Wags declined he got even better.

Paddles still took more 5fers in 101 less tests though 😉

England hammer the Windies as expected…..

….and Ben Stokes achieves a milestone only 18 have, three of them being kiwis !

6,000 runs, 200 wickets – A look at Ben Stokes’ latest Test landmark

Sir Garfield Sobers and Jacques Kallis are the only other players to have achieved the twin feats.

Mark Wood bowled 97.1 mph this morning, the fastest ball ever recorded in a Test match by an English bowler in the UK.

Some collapse this by the West Indies. Went from 61-0 to 91-6.

West Indies 129-9 now. England one wicket from the win. West Indies competed for three days but the fourth has been rather one-sided.

    Downvote.

Boycott is a pretty divisive figure in cricket but personally I always loved his absolute passion for the game.

Sad to hear he’s not doing well.

Joe Root goes past Brian Lara to sit at 7th on the all time list. Some legends above and below him….

    https://www.espncricinfo.com/records/most-runs-in-career-223646

Always a tough one to gauge, compare eras etc. Is Root an ATG or a guy who plays a lot for a team that plays a shitload of tests ( aka the recently retired Jimmy Anderson )

My gut tells me Root is 3rd or 4th best of his era behind Smith, KW and possibly Kohli ( talking test cricket, not all formats )

English press predictably wank on about his amazing achievement ( rightly so I guess ) and he has a brilliant record but I’m just not sure if he sits with the absolute elite.

The Kiwi Pom has hit a fifty in 24 balls. The fastest ever half-century for England.

And Ben Stokes hits a six for England to win the Test by ten wickets and the series 3-0.

Highest average for each batsman in the main test playing nations.

    IMG_0827.jpeg

Do SA seriously not have a anyone who averages 40 ?

    Bloody hell.

The rest all make sense, Windies hang your heads in shame.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere. Didn't realise he'd play so many tests, or had such a good record. I mostly remembered him for scoring a double after Astle dropped him in Astle's 222 test.

    Yeah on the RIP thread.

Probably the best English batsman of his generation. A notch up on Hussain, Atherton, Ramprakash, Hick and my personal favourite Alec Stewart all of whom played a shitload of tests too.

My favourite ever England batsman and genuinely funny nice bloke. Gutted. The comments from his former team mates speak volumes. Lovely article by Atherton talking about him.
