Wimbledon 2024

Amidst lots of other interesting sport, there's some very interesting NZ developments at Wimbledon.
Lulu Sun has progressed to the Round of 16, where she will face (and I'd expect lose to) British Golden Girl Emma Raducanu. Already the best effort by an NZ woman since 1959 and a QF is not out of the question.
Less in the news is that Erin Routliffe (and Dabrowski) are seeded second in the Womens doubles and Routliffe and Michael Venus are seeded second in mixed doubles.
Venus (and Skupski) are seeded 9th in Mens doubles and may be better than that. They won both the Queens and Eastbourne tournaments leading into Wimbledon.

Thought the crowd would be too much, but she was quite convincing. 6-2 in the third. Raducanu double faulted to give Lulu the second break.

Watched all her games so far and she sure is an interesting one to watch. Plays a pretty aggressive style and is a lefty. Does make a fair few mistakes which can get frustrating but dam is she gutsy. Heaps of fight in her.
Ash Barty has been telling people to sit up and take notice all Wimbledon.

Was playing for Switzerland but changed to NZ to have a better chance of making the Olympics. Her timing appears to be impeccable....

She will have a very accurate watch.
There will be hordes of Swiss in their leather shorts descending from the Berner Oberland to dump sacks of Nazi gold and Toblerones at the gates of Roger Federer's mansion and demand she is bought back.
Literally thousands arriving between each chime of the cuckoo clock.

@nostrildamus I had a Swiss flatmate many years ago who was very insistent that the cuckoo clock was not theirs.
They've made a lot of money from them, though!

Vekic has been going to Grand Slams for 12 years.
She's been to the QFs twice - once in Oz and once at the US - she's lost both times.
That might be the sort of experience that will actually help Lulu - she'll have the fearlessness of youth on her side and the crowd should be less hostile than Raducanu's home crowd.
