I can definitely vouch for the WH-1000XM3's. I've had mine for 4 years at least and they are still going very strong.
Very comfortable as I mentioned, I've worn them on a plan for 6 hours plus and not an issue. My Sennheiser and Asus ROG headphones do not give anywhere near the same comfort level on the ears.
The microphone is very good but does tend to pick up some ambient noise.
I use them for work as well as hours of FPS gaming and when I travel.
Reading the reviews of the M4 version, this is very typical review from a website I trust:

I have the 1000X M3's and they're comfy as for long periods. However, I've found headphones with an external mic are far superior at cutting out surrounding noise when in a busy office. Fucken annoying being on the call with the clown you have to keep muting because they're in a noisy office, at home with a crying baby, barking dog etc.

Made me stop and really look at what I needed this for. Consensus online was boom mic was far better at directed noise detection than the 'on ear' microphones. I had no idea there were 'Teams enabled' headphones.
Taken a punt with a Jabar Elvolve 40 - getting a second hand set from Trademe. If it doesn't work the way I want, so be it, will go get something shiny and new. Sounds like (haha) they are comfy, high quality and the 'puck' to control mute, connection, etc would be really good.

Thought I should drop in with an update after a couple of months
I wound up with a second hand pair of Jabra Evolve 40; wired boom mic headset. Very happy with them. The sound cancelling is very good - had an arborist outside my office window at home with a chainsaw and the people online heard nothing.
Works, don't have to charge them, good physical buttons to mash ... so far very happy with them.

Thought this as good a thread as any. Recently, my Sony WH-1000XM3 as mentioned above, died.
For gaming over the past year, I've been using a set of "gaming" headphones from ASUS, ROG DELTA S.
When the Sony's died, I've been using the Delta's for work as well as gaming and boy, what a terrible experience when compared to the Sony's.
So I did some research and discovered IEM's or In Ear Monitors, effectively wired earbuds that are used by musicians, TV presenters, etc.
IEMs have come on in leaps and bounds over the past few years and I decided to get a pair to try and ultimately decided on some Truthear x Crinacle Zero IEMs.
Wow, IEMs are such a different and frankly much better experience. The fact that you no longer have something over the top of your head all day is great (especially when my hair is getting thinner these days), and the sound into your ears are very clean and clear.
After using them for a couple of weeks, I decided that EIMs will be my headphone of choice from now on and as it was my birthday over the Kings Birthday long weekend here in Aus, I decided to splurge on a better pair and so I went with the Linsoul Kiwi Ears Orchestra Lite's.
Now I've gone from wow to WOW WOW! For work and for gaming, what a massive difference. The clarity, the sound stage, even the bass is such an improvement over any headphone I've previously tried.
The fit and comfort is amazing, even though they are in your ears, they don't get hot or uncomfortable in any way over long periods working, gaming or in bloody workshops.
So, if anyone is looking for a new/replacement headphone, I would definitely look at an IEM that's in your budget.

Great point @Machpants which I forgot to add which is a microphone. You're 100% correct that IEMs do not have microphones and so you need an additional mic if you game with friends or obviously for work.
I have a decent external mic already so that wasn't an issue for me, probably why I forgot to mention it.
Finally, for work they are great but it is gaming where they really shine.

Couldn't tell if your account was hacked by an ad-bot... did a quick google on the concept... how the fuck is an "IEM" different from an in-ear ... earbud?
(More than normal interest, as I'm about to set up new working/'puzzling' environment... and was considering buying my first ever over-ear headset.
In the past - been happy with shitty $50 speakers... now I'm earning the greenback, gonna treat myself, innit luv?)

Convince me - why bother? Why not just speakers?
Why not just let laptop speaker/microphone do the job...
...for work - it works. I've done years of 'zoom' calls without issue.
..Playing gamesSolving puzzles - I get the impression it might actually be useful? Been working my way through some Far Crygamespuzzles recently, and had the impression that if I'd been using a more advanced sound system I might have been more aware of which direction some of the ... action... was happening. Is that about it? -

I'd suggest trying a pair first before commenting as I can honestly say, and definitely not being an ad-bot, that for me and my usage, being work with lots of Teams meetings and workshops as well plenty of hours of FPS gaming, IEMs are exactly what "I didn't know I needed until I started looking" when replacing my old Sony's.
To be frank, I wouldn't look at another over the ear/over the head headphone again after using these for the past couple of weeks. but that's just my personal opinion.

@Kruse I went to an over-ear headphone with a boom mike. Outstanding for wearing for too long (shitty online meetings yo) and the boom mike is a game changer for not picking up anything but my talking.
As I said above, people were running a chainsaw outside my office window and it wasn't going through the mic.

Is that about it?Why not speakers - First, I work at home almost 100% of the time and my wife is here 2/3 days a week also working from home and speakers would be annoying to the other person and as I'm in an apartment with others in nearby units also working from home, I don't want to annoy them either.
I've also found from past usage of speakers is that unless they are good to very good speakers, for gaming and especially First Person Shooters (FPS) where you need to be very aware of your surrounds including footsteps and gunfire or explosions indicating enemy nearby, they just don't have the clarity of sound or a decent sound stage.
I've been using both wired and wireless headphones for years and they've done me well including buying some higher end gear such as the Sony's and the ASUS ROGs and they've been good to very good for working/travelling and gaming.
But these Kiwi Ears Orchestra Lite IEMs are just next level (okay yeah, I sound like a ad-bot), so bloody awesome for both work and for gaming and that comes from the absolute clarity of the sound and the extended sound stage. I can hear more details in game with these than I could with my "gaming" and friggin expensive ASUS ROGs.
