Pretty poor form from ABC news here in Oz who write Medical Event in quotation marks as if they think otherwise

A source that was close to him said he had recently had a contract in Japan lined up and it fell through. Not making a speculation or anything but absolutely way too young to pass away

@mikey07 not true. He was catching up with family in chch before going back to Wellington. Then he was off to Japan.
Had a medical event and passed. Sounds like some sort of heart issue.

Cardiologist neighbour tells me sudden heart attacks are the single biggest cause of death in top-level sports. Thinks around 50-70 die in the UK each year.

I'm not a proper athlete, but when I had a stroke in my early 30s I was shocked to hear how often it (and heart attacks) happen to young(er) people.

I guess when you push your body to the limit, sometimes it breaks 😞

I didn't understand everything, but from what he said, it's really hard to detect abnormalities when people are uber-fit, but abnormalities can manifest quite quickly.

Also getting fit/strong is caused by micro-tears in your muscles (including heart) repairing and growing stronger. Sometimes they don't repair if you never give them enough time - ultra distance types are very susceptible. Same reason vegetables are good for you, the reason they are a bit bitter is they are very slightly poisonous, but if you don't overdose (hard to) your body gets stronger fighting against it - along with all the vitamins etc 🙂 Well it's a theory anyway

    nzherald.co.nz/sport/connor-garden-bachop-tribute-highlanders-and-maori-all-blacks-player-to-be-remembered-at-super-rugby-pacific-final

There will be tributes for him at the Super Rugby Pacific final tomorrow between the Blues and Chiefs at Eden Park, as well as at a community rugby level and the First XV match of his old school, Scots College.

Scots College director of rugby Dom Bird said in a statement issued to the wider Scots rugby community that as well as black armbands and a minute’s silence pre-match, there may be an opportunity for haka to honour Garden-Bachop.

“In honour of Connor’s memory and his impact on the team and community, we will be holding a minute of silence before the start of the games this weekend, and where appropriate our teams may present a haka in his memory.

“Our teams will also wear black armbands. These gestures will mean a great deal to Connor’s family, friends, teammates, and supporters.”

New Zealand Rugby chief communications officer Paul Stevens said there would be widespread tributes for Garden-Bachop across senior rugby grades in Wellington, with an opportunity for similar in Otago.
