When the Brumbies had an afternoon fixture a coupler of weeks back, clubs moved their schedule to suit.
Daytime footy. Easy sell to families as @Dan54 says. And more chance of capturing some tourist dollars post-match I suppose.
Or driving back home, pissed off 😬
You’d hope they move the club/college games to an earlier kick off then. We shall see.

Going through the likely match-ups next week I’ve rated the them below.
- Rakete-Stones Vs Ross = even
- Aumua vs Taukeiaho = even
- Lomax vs Dyer = adv Canes
- Delany (if fit) vs Tupou = adv Canes
- Walker-Leawere vs Va’ai = adv Chiefs
- Shields vs Finau = adv Chiefs
- Lakai vs Jacobsen = even
- Iose vs Sititi= even
- Perenara vs Ratima = even, both likely to be announced in the ABs in a couple weeks.
- Cameron vs McKenzie = adv Chiefs
- Rayasi vs Nanai-Seturo = even, on form it’s pretty even between these two.
- Barrett vs Poihipi = adv Canes
- Proctor vs Leinert-Brown = even, two form centres and both will be influential on the outcome.
- Moorby vs Nawara = adv Chiefs
- Love vs Stevenson = even
Would have been even but with no Numia it’s a slight advantage to the Chiefs. Canes being at home will discount that so this game could go either way for me.

The competition this year has really highlighted the benefit of playing at home - the Chiefs tend to look like a different team away (and not in a good way). I think the Canes will do this by 10 or more if they keep their cool.
For the Chiefs, it’s really about whether we can slow down their ball and get ours quick enough to allow us to consistently have runners in motion around Dmac.

If DM can keep up his form from the weekend I think he will be the difference. The teams even themselves out otherwise.

@Canes4life this is the main issue with SR and an argument could be made to make games Sundays, the 1st point of the audience is 150,000 players plus two or three people by association, 400,000 - 600,000 people in total, most will be busy at there local club, only a small fraction available to attend.

I think your ben pretty generous to Jacobsen there, Lakai has been in brillinat form all year.
As a unit the canes pack has been a case of the whole being better than the sum of the parts and if they get Lomax back they will have the advantage here.
The Chiefs will have to hope for parity in the collision area's and that they build on from the backline accuracy they showed against the Reds. Dmac and SS had great games and that made a real difference - hopefully SS actually tackles this week instead of waving runners through.

Clubrugby.co.nz have echoed the sentiment of the game being played at 4.35pm instead of later at 7.05pm. I don't get the feedback around taking a semi final away from Wellington.

There can be no doubt now – they are actively going into bat against community rugby (and local sport, Jason Pine will know there’s Chatham Cup football on Saturday afternoon too and some people do go and watch to both)? With some recent correspondence we have received saying that instead of replays on the big screen of key moments that have just happened on the field they have cut to kissing contests and ‘Simba’ moments (think this is raising your child up on your shoulders?). So the answer could be there – they are not interested in an actual rugby crowd anymore, it’s all entertainment.
And why not take the semi-final to Palmerston North or Napier? That’s a bit extreme for them for a top 4 match, but taking this past Saturday’s quarter-final elsewhere around the Hurricanes region could have been a good idea''.

@Windows97 yeah you could definitely argue that case. I was just trying to highlight how close this semi final is going to be. It's going to come down to a few key moments like it usually does and I'm almost certain there will be some sort of controversy that will have us debating for the next week. Long range forecast is for rain and strong northerlies so that could ruin what should be a fantastic spectacle on Saturday arvo.

The guy who writes the Clubrugby wrap has been complaining about kick-off times all year and why games are always held in Welly blah blah blah. I do kind of agree that a semi final should probably be in that 7pm timeslot but being a parent now I'm happy hauling my arse to a game at 4.35pm instead of 7pm even though I don't think the audience will be nearly as big.

@Canes4life Again it will come down to us still playing rugby do we play our game or do we skip playing to watch the Semi. Last week I chose to skip the quarter final to play and if I wasn’t injured last Saturday I’d probably be playing for my team instead pf going.

My mate heard on the radio that the logic for playing the Canes at 4.35pm is because Sky (being the main sponsor of the stadium) don't want the game to clash with the Warriors. If that's true, what a load of bollocks. Surely as a stakeholder in Wellington's stadium you'd want the Cake Tin to be at capacity, not many better sights in NZ when it's humming.

Last week for the quarterfinals, the Hurricanes as top qualifiers were given the choice between 4.35pm and 7.05pm. Lee said it was an easy “fan focused” decision to go for the earlier start, and his Blues counterpart Andrew Hore said he would have done the same. “Our fans tell us that that kickoff is appealing if you’re a family, and people can go out for dinner and a few drinks afterwards. It works out for everybody… we just think it’s a really good slot and afternoon rugby is great for the players too. “I do know the Warriors are playing Saturday night which is absolutely a part of it. It’s usually a combination of NZ Rugby, the teams and Sky (who decide kickoff times). That’s the way it’s always been and we respect that. Sky in the last two years have been more open to afternoon games which we think is really encouraging.” -

Suits me as I can take my daughter on the odd occasion which is a bonus. Looking at the stadium tickets already sold, they've already sold about 15k.

Much more beneficial to have 10 per cent more people watching the broadcast than 30 per cent more people at the stadium.
Besidea, if the Hurricanes can't basically fill Sky Stadium at 4:30 on a Saturday afternoon for a semi-final clash with another NZ team then there's a bigger problem at play.

Depends what you mean by fill - worth noting in that article the 2016 semi final Canes got 25k against Chiefs

Why stop at 15?

I genuinely think the crowd will be better for 4.30 than 7.00. We can pretend all we want, but he number of us that go to both club rugby and super is pretty small really. I Wellington it may make a difference to 1500-2000 tops, but for rest of Canes region if you going to a 3pm game of rugby, there is probably no chance you are intending to be in Caketin at 7pm realistically. Even if Whanganui ,Horowhenua etc I seriously doubt whether I would do both.

we are going with the kids because its 4.30. also playing roundball at 2.30 and making it work. went last week for the kids 1st rugby game and they loved it so back again this week. as mentioned above I suspect the family numbers outweighs those that play club rugby and would otherwise go. in the football social grades it is common for teams to agree to reschedule so as not to miss big games at the stadium, unsure if thats possible for club rugby
