Ahhh, yes. New Metallica time is always fun. The internet is a fantastic place to be, at this time of year. Right now, as I type this self indulgent wank out on my shitty laptop, people with less musical talent than James Hetfield has in one of his grey pubes are arguing about whether this is a glorious return to form, or just the latest in a long list of disappointments post-Justice. So, with that in mind, Iâ€™m going to add to the pile, and youâ€™re going to sit there and read every word I have to say, like the good little pleb you are. Damn straight.
 
So Iâ€™ll start off by saying that this song is evidence of several things. The first thing that it is undeniable, irrefutable proof of, is that Kirk Hammett needs to quit. He has had a well publicised battle with arthritis, and it really shows. St. Anger had no solos, and somehow, that was still preferable to Death Magneticâ€˜s pathetic offering of wah-laden, standard pentatonic abuse. I donâ€™t know how someone goes from writing, say, the â€˜Call of Ktuluâ€™, or â€˜Unforgivenâ€™, or â€˜Master of Puppetsâ€™ solos, to peddling out an increasingly bland palette of utter shit, but I wish he would fuck off already. This actually hurts, considering I hero worshipped the curly-headed fuck when I was a kid. Now, it seems like he is rocking up into the studio, and recording his solos with a dildo. And not a big, impressive, veiny motherfucker either, no. Iâ€™m talking one of those little petite ones that is shaped like a lipstick tube, the kind that your mother keeps in her handbag just in case she runs into me down town and needs to duck off into the squats for a quick bit of relief.
 
Another thing that is patently obvious is that, somehow, and despite being a stately 53 years old, James Hetfield is inexplicably still an angsty fifteen year-old. The chorus would be kind of embarrassing if it wasnâ€™t coming from one of the most famous musicians in the world. The fact that it is, makes it encroach into â€˜hilariousâ€™ and â€˜unbelievableâ€™ territory instead. I actually cannot fathom how, in insert current year, Hetfield thought that chorus was a good idea. But hey, heâ€™ll make more money out of this one songâ€™s ad revenue than I will in my entire writing career, so what do I know? Sidenote: Papa Het sure can still smash out a riff though, gatdamn.
 
Iâ€™ve seen a lot of people pissing and moaning about the production on this song, too. The general consensus seems to be â€˜why the fuck, when they can afford literally anything in the world, does this sound like dry balls slapping on flypaper?â€™, and thatâ€™s a fair question. Personally I donâ€™t think it is too bad. It sounds like a Metallica song, which is basically exactly how it should sound. Lars has a distinctive (read: average) drum sound, and in my honest opinion, we should be truly grateful that we are now a solid two albums removed from St. Snareless, so all youâ€™ll cowards should stop bitching. It could always be worse.
 
Basically, aside from the lyrics and the solo sucking a massive bag of dew-scented, rotting cocks, the song isnâ€™t too bad. It is pretty reminiscent of their thrash beginnings, and Iâ€™m sure there are plenty of people that are keen for the return of Fast-allica, even if it does come without the appropriate hair length. It will be interesting to see what the first Metallica double album serves up. And yes, Load and ReLoad should have been released as a double album, but they werenâ€™t. Cheers.

Music is so subjective, and there really isn't any band which faces this more than Metallica!
 
I thought Death Magnetic was totally awesome, and still listen to it quite often. Is it at good as the old stuff? Nah, not in my view. But it's certainly the best album since Master of Puppets for me.

I'd got MOP / RTL joint first then DM / AJFA / KEA / Black then rest. 
 
Never been as big on And Justice as many others are. If you ask me thoughts on best albumn between Master & Ride the lightning, I'd probably give you a different answer each time.

Weirdly enough I really got into Load this year, great album even though back in the day as a pimply teenager I thought they had sold-out... Tried re-load too but not as good.

I'm with you Rembrandt, i like Load, it's a solid rock (if not metal) album. And it's also very clear that the songs on Reload were the ones that weren't deemed good enough for Load.
 
While the whole of Load isn't great, there are a lot of songs i really like. 
 
 
The Black album is actually really good if given an unbiased chance, but it's forever been tarred with that sell out brush.
 
 
I love Justice, it's metal as fuck (including having a rubbish production). 
 
If i had to name my 5 favourite Metallica songs, they would be from 5 different albums

I would certainly rate Load higher than re-load, although I struggle for some strange reason to really think of them as Metallica albumns. Both are certainly better than St. Anger.

Low Mans Lyric ... Suicide & Redemption all jump to mind. I also like a massive fan of Tuesdays gone on Garage Inc, but that doesn't really count. So trimming 4 from that list ...

Metallica have just about reached Nickleback status when it comes to online hate and I'm not entirely sure why. In "One" "Enter Sandman" "Wherever I may roam" "Master of Puppets" "Battery" and a few I can't remember they have done shit as good as ANYTHING you will ever hear in hard rock, how come the Stones ( who are another generation apart ) prance around without such ridicule ? Is Lars Ulrich enough of a dick to create this hate ? Was their version of "One" with that weird guy on piano really that bad ? ( well yes Lars is a dick and it was bad ) Is James Hetfields nice guy persona too at odds with his onstage anger ?
 
As good as the above songs I mentioned are they've also done some turgid, utter shit. "Nothing Else Matters" "Whisky in the jar" "Memory Remains" ( fuck off Marianne Faithful, the blame for that is mainly on you, on what planet does that horrific warbling at the end actually sound good ? ) and a few others.
 
They also have my favourite bassist in Robert Trujillo in the ranks and another departed legend in Cliff Burton before him but perhaps the slow ( er ) and steady Jason Newstead was the best man for the job, kind of a Rueben Thorne to their Jerome Kaino/Jerry Collins ? No coincidence that their best work was done with him hammering the four strings even if he was hardly a virtuoso compared to them.

No but I am definitely keen to despite JP encapsulating too much musical Do a Willis for me, I'm member of a guitar/bass group on FB and they post vids etc and in one there was a festival in which a band had FOUR fucken bass players each taking turns to solo......yawn. Fuck me sideways it was 6-7 minutes but felt like an eternity, there's a fine line between good and bad and in terms of guitarists I love Richie Blackmore but can't stand all the neo classical shredheads he inspired. 
 
Again, I love bass as an instrument, play well if I do say so myself and always dig a great groove so will have a watch of the doco, thanks for the reminder.
 
Newstead certainly didn't play a lot of notes but the rhythm in which he played them was pretty awesome. There's any number of pretty ordinary four stringers who get lucky by being in a massive band. Bill Wyman, Adam Clayton, any of ACDCs Bassists and many others, shit even good old Roger Glover was pretty ordinary compared to the rest of Deep Purple but sometimes that minimalist approach suits the band so much better.
 
Trujillo definitely get's the spot in my all time World band spot ahead of Flea, Louis Johnson, Geezer Butler, Steve Harris, John Entwistle, Les Claypool, Larry Graham, Stuart Zender ( Jamiroquai ) Bill Gould ( Faith no More ).......he is head and shoulders above them all and I love his attitude and presence.

Metallica face what they do because of they have done so much cross over. At some point in time, all of their fans, have been of the view that something about them sucked hard.
 
Still, they sell out stadium tour after stadium tour, so I really doubt they give a shit.

I gotta jump on the Metallica 5. From top of my head: House that Jack built, For whom the bell tolls, One, Mama Said, So what. And could easily name another 20 or so. They were my first ever gig at 16 in Wellington, blew my socks off, greatest gig ever...And then 16 years later I saw them again at Download festival in the UK playing the whole black album start to finish plus multi encores of everyones favourites, seriously just as good as when I first saw them. Would see them again in a heartbeat even though I haven't listened to anything post reload.
