    @Bovidae

Is Trask contracted for next year? Jacomb seems like the better long term bet. Trask might be a good poaching target for the Crusaders/Highlanders?

Yes, when Trask went to Japan he signed a 2-yr contract with the Chiefs for 2024-25. It's probably why they let Reihana go too.

@Duluth Think he'd rather be third choice at the Chiefs. Surely Ioane's time is up at the end of this year?

What ? hardly play SR or potentially earning a start somewhere else to push for higher honours or get a lucrative overseas contract.
That doesn't make much sense to me 3rd choice at a franchise probably means going to eventually die away and just survive with no real nest egg for retirement.

I meant 3rd choice at the Chiefs as opposed to 3rd choice at the Highlanders. We are investing in Millar and Faleafaga.

Not sure the Crusaders would want a guy who hasn't been able to stay on the field for the best part of 18 months either?

trask more likely to spend time at fullback than 1st 5 given Dmac and josh J are ahead of him

The reason Trask went to play in Japan last year was to get more experience at 1st 5 and driving his team around the field. The alternative would have been hardly playing, as there were four others who could play 1st 5. I would hope he wouldn't have played fullback this year as that was hardly a success previously.

You would assume Trask was being developed to be DMac's long-term successor but his injuries have given Jacomb an opportunity. If Jacomb is a full squad member in 2025 it would be to replace Ioane.

I agree with your thinking but think the plans would have changed. Trask really has struggled at 10 and 15 just hasn't kicked on. he has talent but injury's has stopped his progress so will be interested what happens moving forward. unless he has a great npc he properly behind Dmac and joshJ at 1st and SS and ENS at fullback

So Sam Cane has been granted an early release from the final year (2025) of his contract with New Zealand Rugby. Are the Chiefs happy with the current options at 7, or do they look for another specialist openside for 2025? I am still not the biggest fan of Jacobson as a 7. I am assuming Florence is only on a 1-yr contract.

I wonder if he essentially retiring due to injury so no need for his final year.

He has signed a 3 year extension to keep playing in Japan.

Can't argue with Cane going now.

My feeling is that we'd be wise to chase a 7 from elsewhere, but I'm not sure who we'd want that is actually better than Jacobson at 7.

With Sititi developing and Finau locked into 6 I feel like Jacobson may still be our best option at 7. Based on that, not sure who would want to come.

The Chiefs desperatly need an openside flanker, Jacobson isn't the answer and if we need to import someone then import someone.

@Windows97 if I were the Chiefs I would throw a contract at Kirifi. Lakai looks to have nailed down that starting spot and Kirifi started out in the Waikato so could be a good match.

@Canes4life Not a bad call. Kirifi was in the same winning Waikato U19 team as Jacobson.

With early contracting into academies it will be tough to get someone already in another SR team unless they want to move. It appears McMillan is happy enough with the likes of Boshier given he is a VC. If that's the case he needs to play there more regularly for Taranaki.

There are young opensides coming through the Chiefs system but they have little or no NPC experience yet, so a few years away from being in the frame for SR.

What is Simon Parker's best position? Is Sititi a possibility. Still think it's worth giving Jacobson an extended run at 7.

No.8 then 6. He's the same height as S Barrett and not mobile enough to be a 7.

I was surprised Sititi wasn't tried at 7. Really McMillan should be using the same loose forward trio against the Rebels that he intends to use for the last two games.
