    At the ground..?

How does that replace the NPC for a viewer of rugby? If I'm home in winter I'll often go watch a club match or a Hastings Boys match, but that doesn't replace watching local players in the NPC.

Get rid of SR. Take the top 10 NPC teams, add the Australian 4/5 SR teams and Drua.

Everything else becomes the top tier amateur level below it.

Naa, just leave it as it is, works for me. I got Super at this time of year and NPC later. You don't like NPC fellas just go your own way, there plenty of us that enjoy it!

    pay for it then.

Well I do, I am a member etc of Taranaki. Go to games all the time. Because you don't bother going I not sure why you so anti and why it would lead you to make such bitchy little remarks. I pay memberships at a couple of clubs, and pay to go to anything from NPC to super to test rugby.

Well done on missing the point: The NPC loses money. There aren't enough people like you,, so for those that say they like it, they're either deficient in numbers or aren't paying enough. So something has to be done.

and one of the reasons is that NZR have starved teh NPC of importance and consequence. So it just doens't matter ...

I agree something has to be done, and isn't that what the cahirmen are trying to do. I ctually thought we see NPC trimmed by a couple of teams, but if we only play comps that make a prfit in rugby, there wouldn't be club rugby etc either. I not against it being streamlined but more the suggestion it doesn't have a place in NZ rugby, or isn't an incredibly important stepping stone for NZ rugby. Someone eralier suggested the pathways were school-academiy, super rugby-AB, I say NPC is a very very important step, as is club and junior rugby.

Many teams are living within thier means now aren't they, some are not, and it's the lack of consequence for failing to do so, as in nothing.

Maybe NZR needed to start docking points of teams or something, but lack of consequence and being bailed out any time they asked nzr for a top up meant teams simply weren't really incentivsed to running efficiently, which along with NZR reducing the importance of NPC, meant it was like it.is designed to fail.

The biggest problem NPC has got it's 1 div and heartland. way back when it 2nd and 3rd div, teams were amateur, but didn't need to bring in outsiders to be competitive. Then the game went pro, and we had super that changed the whole landscape. Tell you what , if the NPC was scrapped, the depth of our super teams would erode within 2-4 years, anyone without a super contract would be off to MLR, or NH clubs.

As has been discussed before, we need to merge the two comps to get the best out of both structures.

Probably 10 teams, linked to projected population growth so it’s sustainable, with reason cost caps and a shorter season.

Less is more, it’s ok to have an off season. Let the players play at 100% more often and not pay for the current meat grinder schedule for the rest of their lives.

Keep the tribalism as best you can and have a comp that pays for itself

@Kirwan personally i would keep a longer season and we just accept not everyone plays every week....BUT...if a short season was the cost to get one cohesive comp/structure then so be it

While this is on the Waikato Rugby website, the news is more relevant to this thread and the relationship between NZR and the PUs in the future.

Waikato Rugby today announced the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer, Carl Moon. Carl will be leaving his role on May 10, 2024, to assume a new position as the Head of Provincial Union Relations at New Zealand Rugby.

Previously this was part of Steve Lancaster's (GM Community Rugby) responsibility.

14 teams has always been ridiculous. The quality of the games is very low now.

    NPC, Sport, Rugby

Gregor Paul: Is this the beginning of the end for the NPC?

Gregor Paul: Is this the beginning of the end for the NPC?

The national competition almost certainly won't have a broadcast partner from 2026.

What seems certain now is that the NPC is going to have a vastly reduced broadcast inventory from 2026 and that, at best, it may score one live game a week on Sky, with some games possibly streamed on free-to-air platforms.

This was made clear earlier this week when NZR revealed, via an e-mail to the unions, the terms of reference for a review it is calling MPAC – Men’s Pathway and Competitions – in which it said it was working on the assumption: “That future broadcast revenue values for the NPC will be significantly lower than previous broadcast agreements, on the basis that Sky TV is not expected to wish to bid for rights to broadcast every NPC/FPC [Farah Palmer Cup] game moving forward.”

So Sky will stop paying for NPC games after next year, and the result on here is ... crickets ...

As was predicted many times, by insisting on having no losers you make everyone a loser.

I'm waiting for an official announcement, not the word of the Sweatie journo. But then I go to the home NPC games.

Well TJ was the one saying that often - and pre Covid the NPC was the third most viewed Sky sport after ABs and Super.

Has viewing dropped off that much since then? Or is this all part of the current politics going on in NZ rugby.

Ah well, I guess I save money not having to outlay for Stan all year round now.

@mariner4life Imagine the tragedy of a competition where your team couldn't play Southland, Manawatu, Counties, and Otago every year!

When he's not commentating (Cantabs, Ta$man and Blues) and discussing his workplace I didn't see any reason not to take him seriously

NZ Rugby chair Dame Patsy Reddy threatens resignation over boardroom standoff

Let her go ahead and do it. Would she be a big loss? Although these quota's might be a factor

And this doesn't seem unreasonable. 3 out of 9. Why is this such a big issue

The Herald understands that Reddy, not for the first time, told the provincial unions that if they continue to push alternative proposals that seek to maintain at least three New Zealand Rugby board members with at least two years’ experience on a provincial board, she could not support it and would, therefore, resign from her post.

@Nepia I find it difficult to believe that NPC has more viewers than NRL.

That's because of the hype of machine of last year. The Warriors always get ok viewership, awesome last year, but the rest of the comp generally doesn't.

There was a Ray Morgan report from pre-covid which I had somewhere, NPC had more viewers (in it's short period) than the 20 whatever week NRL
