Not sure which annoys me more. The Southee medium paced floaty half volley that gets driven for 4 or the medium paced long hop that gets pulled for 4.

Henry is mirroring Anderson nicely - used to be good only with the new ball but can deliver for the whole innings as he has got older.

Henry being the best bowler and Southee and Kuggs being ordinary was 100% to script.

It’s funny how things change, only a couple of years back Henry was firmly 5th choice if that.

I’m thrilled the young fella Sears got such an important wicket first up but the jury is still out obviously.

Speaking of the jury being out is it too unfair to be disappointed in Ravindra at test level overall ? I only heard it on the radio but sounds like it was an appalling piece of cricket. So much hinges on how he goes second time round.

@MN5 Cricinfo tells me Matt Henry has averaged 24.61 over the past 4 years - that's pretty much world class.

I think Ravindra is locked in for the next decade - but, today's effort is probably what comes with young guys learning their trade. Disappointing, but you have to suck it up - similar with what we'll get from Sears and O'Rourke over the next couple of years.

Another pretty disappointing day. Realistically, we're only 3 wickets behind the game - but Oz can - and probably will - use those three wickets to hurt us badly.

    We’ll see.

I remember ( in no particular order ) McMillan, Greatbatch, Sinclair, Ryder etc all starting with a hiss and a roar and things petering out.

Henry is doing the fine wine thing as a bowler. I hope it continues

The thing to do is to back Ravindra and give him a decent run in the side. Not hinge every thing on a second innings against the best bowling unit in the world.

Kane has been more disappointing than Ravindra in these two tests so far.

He’ll get that due to the lack of alternatives. But he has underwhelmed so far.

Just remember the alternative was Nicholls, who would have likely been just as underwhelming if not more so.

So far? He's had 4 tests at number 4 and has a double ton in there.

The whole batting lineup has failed in this series. In 3 innings they haven't cracked 200. Ravindra is the only player other than Phillips to get a 50 in the series.

Henry Nicholls got a double ton too. Against a better team.

But yes, the whole top order has been pretty dire, can’t argue there, I’m sure Nicholls would be even worse.

Henry Nicholls got an extended run in the side.

I'm asking for a decent run in the side for Ravindra not to hinge everything on the second innings.

Good point, I forget we don’t have world class batsmen on a production line. I might be expecting too much too soon.

Nicholls is gone, he’ll get that decent run. Here’s hoping he proves he’s as good as some say he is.

We don't have a production line of seamers either, we can't afford to lose as many bowlers to stress fractures as we do

Don’t forget our keeper who can’t bat any more.

The good news is our spin options are as good as they’ve ever been !!!

Don't discount the quality of the Aussie attack. Even our best performed bats in recent times, Kane and can't miss Mitch Jr have looked bang average. Apart from Ravindra's first test score, we've had little to cheer about when it comes to our batting

Poor old Glenn Phillips, takes a five for and everyone forgets his batting.

I've always thought players should get at least 18 months (so two home summers and a few overseas tours) to figure it out. The step from NZ domestic to international is huge. I'd be disappointed if we dropped Ravindra before the next home summer. Phillips too, I think he's shown he has the tools, so he deserves a decent shot to show he can figure out how to use them.

That’s a fair call and perhaps I’m of the 2020/2021 Black Caps mindset where the team was settled and EVERYONE was performing. Pretty much no dead wood. Conway with a great start, Latham still performing, KW being KW, Taylor creaking but deserving a final hurrah, Nicholls in much better form, CDGH overachieving, Watling ever reliable and the four seamers on top of their games.

    Distant memories now 😞

Knocked the top off now. Once we roll the bowlers we'll get in and bat in the best conditions of the test.

Looking like redemption for a an uncharacteristic poor first test.
