Hazlewood, Starc and Cummins all got erections watching that.

Starc will be bowling 20kmh faster and the ball will be coming from a foot or two higher trajectory. It's hard to see Devon playing his way into form against that attack. Usually it's our form players who play themselves out of form vs Oz.

Paterson is really an old school stock bowler who should be meat and drink to our openers.

I wonder whether we should push Tom Blundell back into opening and bring in another keeper?

    No.

His runs have dried up of late batting at six ( high score of 17 not out in nine innings )

You really think he’d go any better opening against that Aussie bowling attack ?

I think we’re at the point where Young gets a go no matter how Conway goes in the second innings.

Shame to have lost the wicket but I'm pretty happy to only be one down at lunch. I think this is a pitch where wickets will be tough to get if we apply ourselves so I think the plan here is to bat them into submission and not worry too much about runs.

media said 'horror start'. FFS. Losing an opener is not abnormal.

    Man, modern media sucks.

Yeah I saw that headline and figured we were about 3 down.

Conway needs a stint back in domestic cricket to find some form and confidence.

We can’t carry him against Aussie.

Surely an average of ~24 over the last year at a rate of 35 is test winning?

    W
    Piedt to Latham, OUT
Off stump knocked back! Full ball on off. But Latham opts to play off the back foot instead of coming forward. Tries to block, and the ball turns past his outside edge and hits the pole. Piedt enjoyed that!

    Tom Latham b Piedt 40 (104b 1x4 1x6) SR: 38.46

When commentators would say a team was doing well Geoffrey Boycott always replied add 2 wickets and see what it looks like

    75-1 has become 86-3....

Really starting to feel like we got the bowling attack balance wrong. Although I'm guessing O'Rourke would have been left out so maybe not.

Commentators mentioning the “long tail” we have in this game with Henry batting eight. Apparently they won’t do that against Australia and a “bowling all rounder” like Jamieson will bat there.

Splitting hairs maybe but Henrys batting record is better than Jamiesons. The big fella started with 44, 49 then 51 not out and absolutely FUCK ALL since then.

Henry has scored 58*, 68* and 72 since Jamieson got his three biggest scores….

Henry has had three fifties ( two of them unbeaten ) since Jamieson got his bigger scores….

Unless they've done a lot of work in the last 2 years. Then I think they'll both be 'too weak' as 8s v Australia and v the short ball. Happy hookers, Rabada and Jansen had them quite easily covered (although Henry got some hooks and slaps away before succumbing IIRC, Jamieson had a shocker). Don't fancy Starc and Cummins bowling at their armpits. Not that it is their main job, Jamieson is a big target to be fair and can't expect twinkle toed (or twinkle-backed) mobility v balls coming at his body.

This has been an important little partnership between Ravindra and Young, if another wicket or two had fallen in quick succession we’d have been in a bit of strife.

Now for them to dig in again after tea and push on

Yeah more than likely as I reckon both are bowlers who can bat, Jamieson had a great start with the bat which might have created a false impression. Henry is better of late.

Southee did this too of course but that is well and truly buried.

Yeah but discount any innings from Southee.

You can bet it would have been “irresponsible”
