Joe is merely going to coach the Wallabies. It's not on the same level as say Luis Figo leaving FC Barcelona to join rivals Real Madrid back in the day. Settle down, folks.

I wonder if Joe will pull Kerr-Barlow into the Wallabies camp. Tbh the way Kerr-Barlow controls the game for La Rochelle these days would really help the WBs against the Lions. It would also give some of those WB 9s a huge reality check.

Stink for NZ to lose him,

If he can turn around the Aussie test side then it's great for NZ. NZ needs a strong ARU. This hopefully is the start

    Fuck off. Hope you fail.

    i hope he's a glorious success.

Like it or not kiwis, we need Aussie to be good. And alive. The ONLY way that is happening is if the Wallabies can win shit. Starting with the Bledisloe, and then the Lions.

If Joe can't win the Bledisloe back, and then they get humped 3-0 by the Lions, and fail at their home World Cup, then we're all alone at the ass end of nowhere, and economics will crush us.

It might also put the shits up NZ rugby a little if we have to actually work to win stuff down here again.

I have my reasons which I have outlined previously. My petty grudge has lasted 43 years ... Was prepared to let it ride while he was helping us. But fuck him now.

    Otherwise I'd agree with you.

Yeah, it's nice to not like the Oz coach, when Rennie was coach I both wanted us to smash them but them to do well for him.

That's why I find it easier for them to be dead to me. Once they coach another test team, I just shrug my shoulders. Was same when Schmidt coached Irelend, with Rennie, Mitchell, Henry, Hansen when they did other teams. Just wern't on my radar. honestly don't have a big problem with them, but can't bring myself to cheer for other teams in test arena.

Good move especially at a time where even the political nightmare that is Australian rugby might actually buy into.
He has a ok base to start with and “if” the egos can be left at the door he might be able to successfully build a good team.

One thing is for sure is they will only improve

What a mess, seems like RA are holding back payments so they can take over the teams

    @Machpants

There is talk the Rebels may be cut by RA and are understood to be pondering an alliance with the Auckland-based Pasifika Moana.

Would that involve MP moving to Melbourne?

Yeah no idea, as long as NZR don't have to pay for it, like they are now

@Machpants Doesn't the NZ government fund them too, as a soft power exercise?

If that's a deliberate course of action, then there are people at RA far smarter than I originally believed.

The Australian, you say? One of Murdoch's NewsCorpse papers that death-rode Rugby when it became apparent RA wasn't going to play ball, writing a negative article?

    You shock me, sir...

Schmidt might be a better fit than the previous two NZ coaches

He's more prescriptive, the pattern is basic but it has more phases planned up than the normal 'heads up' NZ style. I think that might work for the Aussies who have good athletes but some of them aren't the most natural union guys. I see similarities with Rod McQueen

Just to defend the Australian for a second, they don't write that many positive articles.

@NTA Just out of interest mate. have you heard anything on any of the super teams being in the shit? I have seen the odd article saying Brumbies etc were having a few problems, but not sure what's true or not. We been hearing about the NH ones of course that actually ended up folding, so I don't dismiss them outright these days.

There's no doubt that our super franchises are financially in the shit, but that's true of Australian Rugby generally.

Attendances are going down, costs aren't. TV deals aren't with what they were. The adminstration across the pro game grew fat on Fox money and were never prepared for times of scarcity.

It isn't the end, but we need to be smarter.

Hence the centralisation/alignment discussions. Got the make the operating model leaner.

It needs to happen at grassroots as well - I've mentioned Sydney alone has 4 different unions and 4 different schools competitions involved. And they often fight each other for resources. Why?

Hopefully with the Tahs now out of the NSWRU model, we can start to see some real change.

Australia 'should thank its lucky stars' for methodical Kiwi Schmidt

Australia 'should thank its lucky stars' for methodical Kiwi Schmidt

After two New Zealanders failed in the top job, Australia is lucky to have a third, methodical Joe Schmidt, to take up the coaching reins.
