the bowling unit knew exactly what was going on.

Yeah - would have been completely pointless if they didn't! 🙂

Davey has retired with a test average lower than Mark Richardson. (44.59 vs 44.77).

    That makes me happy.

I'm sure Mark would trade 0.18 per innings for a lousy 6000 or so runs extra ...

Warner would be a shit host of the Block NZ though

Or a host of anything. No dialogue coach would take him on.

Between him being rumoured to get a media gig post-cricket, and the almost complete revision of his part in sandpapergate to redemption story, you've got to wonder what dirt he's got on who.

i do not understand the clamour to get Green back in the side. Right now they have Mitch Marsh doing the role, only better than Cam ever has. And i do not see why you would pick both.

Sometimes i think selectors just continually pick blokes just to prove they were right initially

It took about ten years but MM finally became a very good test player. He obviously took all the constructive criticism from @NTA on board.

@Chris Who do you think they will pick?

It should be Marcus Harris or Cameron Bancroft, but Bancroft is still tainted by sand paper gate but there are some who hid in the background and should have stood up in that saga.
If they don't bring in a new opener and promote with in which they might, as they are keen to get Cameron Green back in the X1 then my pick would be Travis Head promoted or a smokey could be Marnus who judges line and length well.

The Sheffield Shield season is disjointed now but on current form it's not even close

Bancroft averaging 56.88 this year, much better than Harris (31.33) and Renshaw (31.63). They've all played 5 or 6 matches

Yep Bancroft has been the outstanding opener in SS for the last few years,But he is not in favour with the selectors he really does deserve the chance imo.

A summary of some of the options:

    Tom Decent  /  Jan 7, 2024  /  Cricket

Who replaces Warner? Rating five candidates – including Smith at the top

Who replaces Warner? Rating five candidates – including Smith at the top

Now that David Warner has officially farewelled Test cricket, selectors have a big call to make on the veteran opener’s successor.

Green has never opened I can not see that happening he will play in the middle order.

Smith I hope so he will fail in NZ and England opening,He has no technique to combat the early movement with the red ball.
4 slips in cya latter Smith.

Smooth brained Michael Clarke reckons Smith opening means he can go after Brian Lara's 400 because he has more time...

I reckon Smith would dominate in NZ. We are so far in decline. Even if our playing 11 weren't almost all in a mass simultaneous decline, that annoying prick would still probably would find a way to ruin my cricket and bat all day.

Not as an opener he won’t.
But he is not going to be moved from 4 so will probably score plenty.

My post is half doom-mongering about Australia dominating regardless, part lamenting our decline with no re-newal imminent, and part moaning that Smith annoys me.

Not really a serious post on his suitability to open.

But, he'll be fine. He'll be better than Joe Burns, and he crushed us. When we were good.

Nope Smith will fail as an opener .
That is why Cricket Australia will not use him as an opener they know it too.

Smith should have a look at Laras 501 at first class level then look to go 100 better and get 600.

That LB in th3 Big Bash is fucking bullshit. Jordan stepped across yes, but according to hawkeye the ball was going to make a 45 degree turn when it hit the ground. That was going down leg

    @Duluth Pros:

    1. Short ball will be stowed (as you mentioned). Good point.
    2. Less ultra-defensive fields for Smith to contend with - these lower his scoring opportunities. The new ball needs slips and gullies. More gaps in front of square.
    3. His ticks (adjusting his gear between each delivery and noticing a postage stamp extremely wide of long on) will annoy the fresh/ready-to-go new ball bowlers.

    Cons:

    1. Short term selection (2 or 3 years max);
    2. Slow strike rate. However, the ultra-defensive fields set for him probably had something to do with it.
    3. LBW candidate.
