Watching some swimming for the first time (I've finally managed after 6 days to switch to a channel showing swimming, and it is actually showing swimming rather than medal ceremonies, miraculous).

The atmosphere, or rather the tv coverage seems really flat. I don't feel like I'm in the stadium, but instead watching through a really thick sound buffering window.

This isn't a gripe about the sky broadcast. It seems that the in-pool noise is a constant hum of PA announcements, and fucking pop music. Can barely hear the crowd. And no one thinks to change the sound settings for the minute or two that the race is on (although I think the PA may be blaring out commentary during the race as well?).

Maybe this vanilla IOC broadcast wants to hide any booing? Basically can't hear the crowd either before, during, or after the races. -

It seems to me the stadiums are filled with supporters of athletes, and not much else. I stand to be corrected because adopts Hugh Grant voice I'm just one man watching a TV broadcast asking if the local spectators are actually there but . . .

-
Velodrome is the same as the pool. Crowd noise and PA is just a quiet background hum. PA doing fucking commentary during the races.

Edit: and this is a constant PA stream of commentary as eg Holland race themselves in team pursuit qualifier? How can this need constant commentary?

The most underwhelming olympics I've ever watched, is my verdict so far. -

Wrong flags being used seems to be an issue - NZ and Aussie flags mixed up, wrong Chinese flag etc.

But from the comments made by the IOC vice president, sounds like there are constant niggles, and they are not very impressed with the Rio organisation. Ambulances going missing, robberies, cab disputes, bullets flying...not a great look for the host city.
-
She's amazing. Almost superhuman.

Leads me to think out loud: I've noticed at these games is how many African-Americans (do we still can them that?) are now in events like gymnastics and swimming for the USA team.

Was I just not paying attention during Beijing, or does this represent a cultural shift? -

Fucking sucks with the rowing and shotput on at the same time and then the Fern crashed.

Mahe and Emma Twigg comfortably qualify for their single sculls finals. Fuck Emma's race was tight, a bit of a slow start but she was gaining on Brennan with every 500m. Probably would've come first if she'd been given another just 20m.

And Val easily qualifies for her final with her first attempt. Best throw so far.

The Women's Lightweight Double Scull final is on at 1:32 and the Women's Pair Final is on at 2:04.
-
Well that was shit. I thought those girls were reigning world champions
-
I switched channel. Thought they were heading for 6th. That will learn me.

Found this interesting. Firstly for the fact that Indian sports officials think they're bigger than the sport. Whodathunkit?

Secondly that a country with a quarter of the world's population has no medals.

https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.smh.com.au/sport/olympics/rio-2016/olympics-off-the-field/rio-olympics-officials-warn-india-your-delegation-is-pushy-and-rude-20160812-gqrld8.html?client=ms-android-telstra-au -
Tuke and Burling have just won a race by a considerable margin. No idea if it's a medal race or not as there is no commentary, but some fullas dressed in kiwi suits are in party mode on the beach.

Edit, something just flashed up on screen saying it was race two.
How many races are there? -

Generally 10-12. Finishing 1st gives you one point, 10th gives you ten points. Lowest overall points wins and you can discard your worst races.
