Actually, you saved yourself a very nasty stay in the cellar with the last bit because I agree with that (although you are out by about a year. 19 would be better).

will go against the grain here a bit.depends on what age ute you are looking at. if late 90s or early 2000s hilux id fine but if 2010 onward it opens up your options. from there onwards hilux really come back into the pack. what you are buying then is a car with a deck.currently driving a ranger doing about 40k in it a year and enjoying driving it and previously drove a bt 50 for 250000k and still own it and it does everything it should.
if buying a later ute i would be going for the best value that i could find ,any brand while ruleing out the triton and the great wall etc. all the good brands with diesel motor should be good for well over 350000k if looked after if not more.Yep mate, it very much just a run around vehcile. We got a new Subaru XV last year for main stuff. Just want something I can run to tip in etc and as I getting old, getting mates moed to tow golf clubs if I do 18 holes. So imagine in general would not bedoing much more than 80-100 kms a week, a couple of times at very most to Eltham golf club, but apart from that maybe tip, pick up a bit fo stuff from Bunnings etc. I actually going to have a look at at a 2002 HiLux tomorrow (got a soft spot for tham as used to have one in Aus) It's actually a double cab which I don't really need, but should do job if it any good.
I have taken note of all posts, and genuinely grateful for all advice etc!

Holy shit. @MajorRage and my mechanic were right. Gone up more in value than toilet paper in a pandemic.
Going out to lock mine now, if the lock still works, hasn't been used in years.

@Dan54 Sounds more like it for 2wd with reasonably high KMs (although I wouldn't be too worried about that). I paid that for my second one (a Hilux surf) bought about 5 years ago. 1998. 250,000km but mint condition. Flash wheels and rubber worth about $2500 (got stolen so know what they were to replace). Now done 280,000 and only thing I have done is new exhaust. Same as the ute one I'm doing now.
Have a good look for rust. My 2004 ute had some surface stuff on chassis that was easy enough to sort out (caught early) but they get it in the door sills and that can be a bit of a major.

Yeah, the 24 valve 80 series really hold their value here . Shame the 70 series goes back to four cylinder next year.

You're not wrong. Last year the local toyota dealer somehow got the impression I have money and gave their hilux demonstrator for the weekend while my van was getting serviced. Compared to the 78-05 models they are incredibly fat and soft now.
You should look into the legality of towing your digger. The police lost the money from speed cameras to Waka NoMahi so they are looking for new revenue streams and a crackdown on trailers and towing is on its way. The tow rating of a 2wd lux of your era is surprisingly low but if you've got a winch and bullbar you might be over the towball rating .

If its a diesel take it to a diesel mechanic for a look first .The 5l engines last a long time with proper servicing but the cost of getting a fuel pump replaced for an electronic injected version is pretty eye watering.
