@Kiwiwomble I'm turning it into a Hilux thread anyway, so the title can be changed to that.

@Snowy had a 2wd Toyota in Aus and never let me down, was my work vechile and geez I wished I kept it , and brought it back home with me. Even being retired now, I starting to get pissed not having a ute for the few things I want it for, and best of all if Mrs decides a wekkend down the way at daughters etc is on, I still got a vechile for rugby etc!!!

in all honesty, just buy another one of those. They are basically indestructible.

For anyone that is into collecting upvotes there are free ones given out in this thread for anyone that says nice things about Hiluxes (what is the plural? Hiluxi?)

I will make space in my cellar for those that don't.

we always use to have tritons for work utes and i got so annoyed because there was a very good reason they were 10-15k cheaper than a hilux...they were shit in comparison, this is a couple of generations ago so dont know if they have improved....but id still go for a hilux (or a ranger, they get some good press)

will go against the grain here a bit.depends on what age ute you are looking at. if late 90s or early 2000s hilux id fine but if 2010 onward it opens up your options. from there onwards hilux really come back into the pack. what you are buying then is a car with a deck.currently driving a ranger doing about 40k in it a year and enjoying driving it and previously drove a bt 50 for 250000k and still own it and it does everything it should.
if buying a later ute i would be going for the best value that i could find ,any brand while ruleing out the triton and the great wall etc. all the good brands with diesel motor should be good for well over 350000k if looked after if not more.

google tells me the second gen BT-50 is on the same base as the Ranger but the current BT-50 is based on the Izuzu D-Max

A family friend had a Hilux for the farm. They had it in the 80's when I was a kid and I am pretty sure it was still going a few years ago before they sold the farm. It survived being sideswiped at the Whangamata turn off at Hikuai by american tourists.

I remember we had a day out with that family in the hilux joining a 4wd trip up somewhere off highway 25A. Never got stuck and we were pulling out the drivers from Pauanui in there Lada looking 4WD's.
