off the top of my head I'd say those two have a combined All Black career of about 10 minutes.....and all of those belong to Ngatai.

That's pretty fucken rough on Crotty, Fekitoa, Moala, SBW and even Taminuvula. Are they all just keeping the jerseys warm ?

In my opinion ALB has the biggest upside out of all those names you have there. Ngatai was the real deal but has shit luck with injuries.

SBW is off course the incumbent but age is not on his side. I don't rate the others much. -

Moala deserves a crack at 13. His defence since moving to 13 this season (Blues/one ABs test) has been excellent.

As long as he passes the ball. Neither Fekitoa or Moala are great distributors, but I would prefer Moala on form.
-

I'm less worried re our 13's distribution, more with their organisation of the defensive line. The prospect of Folau or Bosch coming into the backline against a Fekitoa run backline D gives me the shits.

Especially as the end result will be Dagg having to try & cover the mess, slipping of a miracle tackle on Folau & having the fern berate his shithouse defence. Or Savea stuck in no mans land covering 2 guys & the Fern asking why his D is so awful after being great just a year ago.
-

I don't share the same overriding concern about Fekitoa's defensive alignment abilities. He's not the only one making calls out there. Whoever is at 13 is working with his wingers and fullback. Both Dagg and Ben are pretty vocal too. Also Fekitoa has made some excellent tackles . It's a strong part of his game and if he wasn't communicating I bet the coaches would know.

TBF, at least Dagg got a hand (fingertip) on him, May also made the two white Smith's look silly and stationary before even getting to Dagg and they're two of the Fern's greatest heroes.
-

You're right, Conrad did make the initial error (not Ben though). Maybe you can go and discuss that on the Pau rugby forum and their upcoming selection debates.

Cheers -

Yip, that video proves the point - centre (and a great centrre at that) fucks up, Fern go to town on Dagg.
-

Fullbacks only have to make a couple of tackles a game. So if you fuck up it's remembered.

We were very lucky with Mils because more often than not he would make those desperation attempts.

Dagg misses quite a few more.

Conrad gets a pass because we see him getting through a shit ton of defensive work. so the odd howler is forgiven.

I would suggest if Dagg's defensive game was on point he wouldn't have been on the outer last year (he missed the WC squad in case his fluffers forgot), despite a lack of attacking edge.
-

I feel he missed out because he is a specialist 15. And in a WC squad if you aren't the starting 15, you don't get to go as a specialist, not with Barrett & NMS providing cover there.
-

I certainly recall Mils missing tackles, front on and desperation attempts, that have been costly as well. But that doesn't mean he wasn't a good enough defender at test level.

Yep Dagg has had some poor misses as well and I've yelled at the TV, but Dagg appears to have polarised posters on here so the drums beat louder. -

Cully never missed a tackle in his life.

That's funny cos it's partially true. He was actually a very good defender and quite handy on attack too.
-

Everyone remembers Mils missing tackles because it hardly happened. He was safe as houses under the high ball and was an awesome defender. If anything, Mils was more known for his defence rather than running game.

If he missed a tackle, it stuck out like a sore thumb.

I still remember when Rico Gear skinned him on the outside, because that just didn't really happen. One on one you backed Mils to make the tackle.
-

I think Cullys pace managed to paper over some of his positioning issues on d.
-

i reckon that is far more a reflection of lack of ball security in the tackle - those errors kill us - and perhaps offensive decision-making.

i think his defensive judgement is generally pretty good. he hits hard and doesn't miss often, he's always looking to hold guys up and/or rip the ball away, and he flies up out of the line when it's necessary. he gets the latter wrong very occasionally, not much.

it's his work when he's got the ball that i think needs sorting out.
