Black Caps - Bangladesh tour

I don't think Wagner (or whoever was going to be the 3rd seamer picked) will actually play on that tour, unless someone gets injured. If we played the 3 seamers we'd be looking as long a tail as Sodhi at 7.
I'd be disappointed at this selection if it was to anywhere else than Bangladesh, which have been awful pace bowling conditions (pitches and humidity) when I've seen tests from there. But, it's a worrying sign at Stead and co's continuing lack of grasp of any continuity planning.

For a tour of Bangladesh, assuming you actually wanted this 3rd seamer to actually play. Should have picked Nathan Smith.
Is in good form. Has bowling skills that would actually have some use in Bangladesh, can swing it both ways at decent clip. In short bursts assuming the humid conditions swing, he'd be more useful than Wagner. Also a very tidy batsman meaning you can play both Patel and Sodhi in batting order with confidence rather than shoe-horning Santner or Ravindra to bowl too many overs as a second spinner.
Lets face it. If we win the series it will be because of good batting and our spinners. Not because of our 3rd seamer. But a 3rd seamer that allows you to pick your 2 best spinners rather than compromising with square pegs, would be a better collective selection towards a victory.
Not that I don't doubt he'd have found it bloody hard over there.
Plus I'm talking a horse-for-courses type of selection. If it was a home test series then picking O'Rourke would be the no-brainer IMO. And I don't think ruthless horses-for-courses selections are a good idea with young debutants.
So, not furious ...

So what’s our XI look like for the Bangle tests?
I’d go:
Latham
Conway
Kane
Mitchell
Ravindra
Blundell
Santner
Jamieson
Sodhi
Southee
PatelThis gives us a fucking quality top 6, and plenty of spin options (surely one of them comes off…?)
But we all know Nicholls will play, likely in place of Ravindra or Santner.

Nicholls scored a double century in his last test and has been ripping it up in the Plunket Shield, unless he gets injured he is 100% batting at number 4.
So unless they feel they need three frontline seemers, then it's a toss up between Santner and Ravindra for allrounders spot. I reckong they should pick Ravindra and bat him at six as pure batsmen who just happens to be able to bowl and push Blundell down one postion.

@LABCAT shit I don’t even remember Nicholls getting a double, so you’re right there is no way he misses out.
I’d take Ravindra over Santner, not sure Stead will though.
There isn’t room for part rounders at test level.
When will NZ realise this ?

Santer. 24 tests. 41 wickets @ 45.63.
He's great with the white ball but do we need to see if that is finally going to carry over to tests? It hasn't previously.
I know that stats aren't everything, but Mitchel and Ravindra could make up a fill in 5th bowler that would likely achieve something like Santner's numbers.
I assume that Michael Bracewell is still injured? Other option is to take a punt on Phillips (gulp) but as a 5th bowler I'd actually give him more chance of taking wickets than Santner. Getting 20 wickets being the object after all.

I don't think Bracewell is the answer either

Another “oh he bats a bit but most importantly he bowls spin” let’s get him in the team ASAP type players.

Middling journeymen shouldn't have a place in the rest team. Decent at both disciplines, master of neither. Either you go for a wicket taking spinner, like Ajaz, or a quality bat that can bowl a bit (Ravindra)

So, who are these star spinners that go in if we don't play Santner, Bracewell (still injured) or Phillips?
@canefan Ajaz is in the team above already. So the wicket taking replacement for Santner is....
Would assume Ajaz and Sodhi are the 2 main spinners, as per Pak tour a year ago.
