RWC Final: All Blacks v Springboks

That isn't good enough for a 6 in my books but hey it's a big empty slate for Razor next year anyway. We'll have good props, a great lock, competition at 6, Harmon at 7 (mostly joking) a quality 9 and 10, great wings and solid midfield, and a surprise package maybe at 15.

Does someone have stats? I read a report Shannon made 1 tackle in 55 minutes, surely that is in error. If Akira played like that this Forum would have imploded. And I say this as someone who thought SF played himself back into the team this year.
While I question the accuracy of tackles/missed tackles, the use a consistent method: https://www.espn.co.uk/rugby/playerstats?gameId=596201&league=164205
Frizell had 1 tackle and 1 missed tackle.
Taylor/Scottie/Ardie were the only players in double figures and Jordan/Cane made 8 each. The team made 93 out of 106 tackles of which 47 (50% of successful tackles) were made by the 5 players just mentioned.
Ardie once again leading stats defensively and offensively. Fkn machine

And speaking of tackles, de Groot gets a forearm to the nose and it's just "a glancing blow". Play on.
And despite it all, we still could have won if we'd kicked our kicks or set up a DG on one of two occasions.
we just couldn't get into position for a DG though could we - they defended well in that final stretch and we were rooted
I recall two occasions we were near the 22, dead in front
Boks showed multiple times drop goal attempts in that game in those field conditions were very difficult
IIRC theirs were generally from miles out

What could we have done differently.
I think Roigard on the bench could have given us what we needed at the death. I think we missed a few touches we would have liked to have again and I think we went for the corner too early when there were points on offer. Should Cane have made more of the forearm to the face. Probably squeaky wheel and all that. Finally I think dmac needed more time to work some magic for us. He looked dangerous with every touch.
Foster is always conservative esp with the bench. This kind of plays into SA's fave ploy, grind you down and squeeze you out, 1 point win is a 1 point win.

Especially as he was largely a one man loose forward unit out there

@No-Quarter Bok supporter and I agree. A YC is appropriate, but not a RC. Perhaps extend the length of the YC to 15-20 minutes, but don’t eliminate the player altogether.
I think both teams got fucked by referee and TMO intervention, though the ABs more. But even more importantly the spectacle is just ruined when they are always searching for indiscretions and arbitrarily applying the laws. The game constantly stops and it's confusing as fuck as to what is even going on for long periods. It's a terrible spectator sport right now.
-
@No-Quarter looking for reasons to rub out tries and send people off
-
@nzzp yep, it's a real negative way to look at it...and how far can they go back, cos you know go back far enough and you will find an error somewhere.
If WR care about the game, they have a number of issues to deal with.
-
@ploughboy just kinda sums up where the game is at right now, that more often than not, the reffing team has a say in the outcome.
I'd also say, had we pulled off an unlikely win we'd still be talking about many of those moments in this game where the ref team made contentious decisions.
Boks won, we lost, that's the easy part to swallow compared to where the game is at IMO.
-
Did the All Blacks do some things wrong? Absolutely, but that doesn't mean that we can't legitimately say the 50/50s didn't go our way. I'm not sure the Boks were necessarily that much better, but the day belonged to them, and they got the rub of the green. There's no conspiracy to it, it was just how things fell.
On another day Kolisi gets a red, Frizell doesn't even get penalised, we get a free kick at the end etc. That's rugby at the top level, it just so happened that there were many incidents in that game, which was an abomination. It wasn't a good game, it was a close game which made it tense. The two big quarter-finals are what the game should strive for... could be wrong, but I don't know if there was a singly 10+ phase movement in that game.

I don’t think we can be critical of them not setting for a DG. We made a move that went about 30 odd metres and after ALB didn’t take the Ardie offload, we had no prior.

Congratulations South Africa, immense game and a win for the ages.
Also a loss for one and I shed a few tears.
After SC’s red I had a lot of mates saying we were done, game over, but I had a strong feeling it would galvanize us and we would win.
Well I was wrong but kind of right.
Apart from the decisions to turn down points and missed kicks what killed us was the 50/50’s, our timing was out by a split second all game, difficult conditions.
We won against Ireland by a) taking the points on offer (and they lost by kicking to the corner) and b) not throwing 50/50’s. Not sure why we were still trying that touch rugby at the beach shit late into the 4th quarter.
Tl;dr this one hurts more than most.
Barnes, TMO, 14, 13, 12 men we are expected to and actually could of and should have won but didn’t play percentage footy like we did against Ireland.
C’est la vie, we’ll be back.

Boks are pretty mediocre team. Certainly not in top two in world, maybe not in top three.
Result is like a sporting quiz oddity.
I’d like Foz to come out and say that he thought we were a notch ahead of them tonight, but sport is an odd thing and sometime the lesser team ends up with its name on the trophy.
Fucking well played ABs. Bloody proud of you.
I’m not sure how you can say this about a team that has won three incredibly tight games in a row
I was here and their shortcoming were very apparent. If the French game had been reffed properly they would have lost it, and they were hugely assisted tonight by official rulings and still only finished a point ahead.
So, for me, just a sporting aberration.
That’s what makes the game so beguiling.
…..and if the ABs had kicked better, Cane had tackled better and whatever else they might have won it.
This post comes across ever so slightly like sour grapes you’d expect on FB

@frugby yep, it's a game of inches and seconds, and the Boks made the inches and ate the seconds.
Leave Fozzie out of this

The fact there were so few tackles speaks to the way the game was played... don't forget also, Frizell only played about 40 minutes (obviously you'd expect more than one tackle though).
