Speaking of popcorn movies, finally watched Fast X. (Fast and the Furious 10) .
Actually not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Momoa actually has the personality to play a twisted villain. Fun, as long as not taken too seriously.. even if it is a part one movie. Story is always the same really
3 impossible stunts out of 5 infinite sequels

    Just seen Oppenheimer.

Engrossing film. Brilliant casting and acting, long without being boring, split timelines that tell the story in a non-confusing way and special effects that add to the story rather than take it over. A bit non Nolan-like. And Florence Pugh has a great pair.

And yet....and yet.... I can't quite make up my mind whether it's a truly great film or just a wee bit superficial and slick.

@Victor-Meldrew Not that I go to the cinema much these days, so moot I guess but your summation is pretty much in line with my pre-conceived viewpoint.

A great story, though maybe be a bit dull taking out all the explosions stuff add Nolan as a director, add a hot ticket actor as main man and then a who's who of formerly power punchers as supporting actors, what could go wrong?

That's the thing. The story is anything but dull, the story-telling is outstanding and the actors don't overwhelm the story - I found the explosions stuff was there to support the story above all.

The film made me think about the story being told and how it was being told. It was Nolan, but un-Nolan - if that makes sense.

    Robocop
    Robocop 2
    Robocop 3
    Robocop
    (2014)

    • What beautiful examples of 1980s/1990s movies
    • What beautiful examples of a "franchise" devolving into a parody of itself
    • Some fucking BEAUTIFUL racism... absolutely ZERO understanding of the difference between Chinese and Japanese cultures in Robocop 3.
    • What a beautiful example of a franchise-reboot that I'd completely forgotten even existed... despite starring Samuel L fucking Jackson, Michael goddamn Keaton, the guy from For All Mankind, Omar, and Gary freakin' Oldman

    Also beautiful examples of:

    • 1980s/1990s - do NOT fuck around. The jacket says "Robocop". There is VERY little time until there is a Robocop. And Robocop does Robocop shit.
    • 2014 - nearly 30 minutes in, we finally see what we always knew what was going to happen - Murphy getting seriously hurt, and a freakin' Robocop.
      • but eventually... little throwbacks to the original
      • and PC gone mad! The black male cop captain becomes a black female! The white female partner becomes a black male! Agendas! Agendas everywhere!

    Robocop!

I loved that the Giant robot in Robocop 2 was a drug addict who crushed his exes skull when he realised he didn’t have a cock anymore.

I loved how they absolutely dove into the idea of a kid being a "baddie" - and taking advantage of it.

The mad scientist chick was pretty hot too, definite MILF qualities.

Robocop 1 and 2 still hold up despite the horrific “this is what the future will look like from our 80s perspective” but I remember 3 being absolute shit…..didn’t he get chopped up by some robotic ninjas ?

    Barbie

Sure, there's underlying sex politics (what women can achieve, gender roles, etc.) but it's still a good watch. Margo Robbie dressed as Barbie.

Only bad bit is you don't get to see Barbie's tits now that she's made it.

Robocop 2 was WAY better than Robocop 1. There I said it.

Much more satirical, better action ( That Robocain was awesome, Cain was a cool baddie too ) and I mentioned the scientist.

Honourable mention to whatshisnames Dad from that 70s show though to be fair. He played the part well.

Steve Kloves wrote and directed The Fabulous Baker Boys, which was brilliant movie with huge chemistry between the cast, and his first. He followed that up with Flesh and Bone, and never directed another movie.

After 70 minutes, boy is Flesh and Bone booooooooring. What a fucking dud.

He also wrote Wonder Boys, which I remember being excellent, and had big commercial success with children's movies.
