RWC Week 1: France v All Blacks

@Machpants yeah I'm not really understanding his argument. Roigard is a match winner and he showed that plenty of times for the Canes this year. His numbers were by far the best out of any halfback in the competition (including Smith), and I don't think that he's much of a drop down from Smith at all.
Correct, you aren't understanding my argument. If you want you can debate that last point, it is a fair argument.
My argument is that it doesn't actually matter, because if we are in trouble, it won't be a halfback who digs us out of it, and if it is a halfback, end even if it is a halfback, I think it is more likely to be Smith controlling the game, and a death by 1000 quick passes, rather than an individually brilliant snipe. For the millionth time, I think Christie is shit haha.
I'm sure TJ Perenara's SR numbers were also better than Smith's, because SR is a different game. More open, weaker defences etc. However, Knockout games at the RWC are all about exuding control, and Smith brings that in far greater capacity than all of our halfbacks in my opinion.

Jacobsen - but he got exposed cruelly against SA.
We can now watch Papps get cruelly exposed against France.
Good times...
This is a joke post right?
He was the player subbed. He had fuck all time to be cruelly exposed.
It's Paps chance to shine

@frugby a halfback has a huge impact on a game. They touch the ball more than anyone else in the side. The fact you say a halfback won't win us a game or get us out of trouble if we are in the shit is nonsense. Just look at France and the impact of Du Pont, take him out and France are clearly not the threat they are when he's there. He's a sniper and has the ability to rip teams up so your point about having a speedy pass isn't the be all and end all.
Roigard has attributes that are tailor made to WC knock out rugby. His kicking game is second to none, he has the size to mix it up with the bigger teams and he has the best running game of any NZ halfback apart from maybe Fakatava. Christie offers none of these, so going back to my original point of having Roigard on the bench over Christie could definitely be the difference in us losing and winning a WC knock-out game.

Well vs Springboks Roigard changed the game as soon as he ran on the pitch

After quick reflection, I thinking perhaps Christie ha got bench spot because coaches feel he's got extra experience in the furnace if he has to come on early?
Strong defensively too, although his form this year isn't great.

To have any chance.
Huge patience. Cut out the 50:50's
DONT F*CK ABOUT IN OUR OWN HALF. KICK IT!!!
Pick and goes. We are very good at this.
Make use of the opponent corners.Mistakes so far. No Roigard, too many wingers.

Looking forward to this, (even with the 23 named being somewhat not unexpected) me and the missus are heading to the game. Leaving early tomorrow on the redeye, weather is humid as here in England, and is due to be more so in Paris (27 degrees) on Friday evening. Me and the missus will wear our best best Black in an effort to hold the Kiwi end up among 85k rabid, baying French. Should be a good night.
-
frugby are you really arguing to put shitty replacements on the bench when we have a really good match winner not being selected? That's an argument that's not making a lot of sense.
I'll probably also put McKenzie on the bench too, he could really change a game around and offer a point of difference. -

Play direct and no one can stay with us. Spin it wide early and ALB is going to get smashed behind the gain line every time. The ABs have to channel the first half at Mt Smart. What annoys me is that we seem to go away from the winning formula far too often. My expectation level is at an all time low this time around

Yep, and as almost president of Roigard fan club myself, I not sure if the cauldron of opening match against home team at WC best place for a kid to get experience, though I can see him getting a few games in other pool games, and maybe get a spot by QFs.
I also wonder if Narawa coming home , it may pay Ethan Blackadder to have a ripper against the Naki on Sunday? I will be at the match so will be interesting to see, I somehow think Jase Ryan will be plaumping for him!

Nah, Roigard is proven winner in RWC games. Only a clown like Foster wouldn't play him....
...style of thing

Not if the forwards play as shittily as they did against the Boks the other week. I hope they and the coaching staff got a good rocket up their arse after that ill-disciplined shocker up front.
-
Please let the game start! I can’t take any more of McLeod at 2nd five! Leicester at 2nd five! If only Roigard was there!

I'll say it loud and clear, I think Christie is terrible, probably not in my top 5 halfbacks in NZ, let alone being on the bench for this test.
I think Roigard is great, and will be great, but when we lose (because I think we will) people will likely scapegoat Christie, and will discuss the what if Roigard was on the bench?
In reality, I think we are more likely to lose because of a lack of a good tighthead prop, the lack of a proper blindside flanker, the lack of a hard-carrying 12 and the lack of a proper backup lock - granted in these positions, the coach's hands were somewhat tied.
Of course we could and should criticise the selection of Christie, but for the maximum 15 minutes he is likely to play, I don't actually think it greatly affects the outcome of this game.
If it does, and we lose because Christie did some terrible kicks, or some shitty passes, just like everyone else I'll be hounding it, and I hold my hands up, but I really don't believe he will he even get 10 minutes, and I don't believe it will have a material outcome on the game.

Couldn't even tell the difference when he come on against the Bok.
