NPC 2023

@Steven-Harris i think the idea is that the unions get very little support from NZR, so if we were taking about a new comp that had the same backing as the current super and NPC combined things would have to be more rosie
currently all the advertising/marketing money and time is split (unevenly) between two different comps
Mrs Womble and I have been together for 18 years, she still has to be reminded which comp is running at which time of year etc...we dont make it easy for the casual fan to get engaged and hand over their money
-
Sorry I haven't really engaged in the above arguments and suggestions but what about this North/South concept they mooted last year?
North pool: Northland, Harbour, Auckland, Counties, BOP, Waikato and Taranaki
South Pool: Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Wellington, Ta$man, Canterbury, Otago, Southland.
Obviously raises the concern of how to fit the Ranfurly Shield in, but I'm sure there'll be some solutions. If it's solely a financial scenario from NZRU then that would cut alot of costs and shorten the season a bit which is obviously their wish.
Finals structures could cross over somehow maybe??
-
@J77 i thought that fell over pretty quick as was suggested it would be cheaper when it came to travel...until they realised your still going to fly form otago to wellington or HB...so whats the benefit of "north" and "south"
-
@Kiwiwomble got to be better than flying from Dunedin to Whangarei though right?
-
@J77 minutely maybe, 1.5hr flight rather than 1hr flight? and actual cost probably very similar
-

There would be no difference between connecting between Dunedin - Napier and Dunedin to Whangarei
-
@Kiwiwomble I think if you add it up it would save the goblins at NZRU something in the grand scheme of things..surely
-
-
sure, 6 of the 7 norther teams are all drivable so they they get a benefit....but that would create more "haves" and "have nots"
@J77 i think it make a tiny contribution to problem #12 (made up number on a made up list for effect) so barely worth the effort to talking about
-
@Stargazer they are more often thatn not.
-

That's the most awful suggestion thus far. First of all, that would lock provinces in one and the same pool every year. That would get boring. Second, existing rivalries and inter-provincial trophies played for would disappear.
-
@Kiwiwomble point taken, but to me a tiny contribution is something anyway. I, like many others just want to see this competition stay afloat somehow..
And yes, I'm going to be bias and want to see my team remain, because everyime these convos pop up we are mentioned as one of the first on the chopping block alongside Manawatu and Southland..
-
@Stargazer yeah I get that.. but amongst everything else already mentioned I see it fair to bring up, as really this whole competition could go completely under.
-
@J77 i get the sentiment but as @Stargazer says (and we disagree on lots of this stuff)...i think the problem it would bring would cause more problem than they would solve
if we want to save money on transport then lets ditch NPC all together and use something like the 1stXV model for Club teams, winner of dunedin club comp plays the winners of the other sth island club comps and have a "top 4" of club teams
NOT A SERIOUS SUGGESTION
-
@Kiwiwomble well haven't I been told then.. I'll leave it there. Just an opinion.
-
@J77 you're free to disagree but you havent explained how you think @Stargazer 's points aren't valid, off the top of my head, no battles of the bay's unless both HB and BoP make play offs?
-
@Kiwiwomble yeah that really sucks. Like Stargazer and yourself I too love the rivalries etc and would hate to see them die. However, I'm talking a real doomsday situation here, as I think the NZRU want to kick this whole thing to the kerb. Do we still want to see all our provinces playing in something at least, or kiss goodbye to them forever?
-
@Higgins thats a very good point, I would say the womens comps are still piggy backing the mens game, sure we got a boost from the RWC here, but I would say the womens comps are less sustainable than the NPC, and unfortunately additional drain on resources, however with the growth of the womens game, I imagine th euproar if they ditched the FPC.
-
@taniwharugby Would be hard to justify, too, as SR Aupiki is only a 4 team competition and they play far too few games without a home-and-away round robin.
-
-
@mariner4life Your idea, of a potential structure based upon the NRL's integration of lower levels, was one of the better suggestions I've seen.

recap @mariner4life ?
-
@Kiwiwomble think everything ran concurrently, club, npc, super
-
the more we talk...the more it also feels weird to be super > club > NPC with international scatter inbetween...seems a like it doesn't flow

@KiwiMurph said in NPC 2023:
Damn, they could have used pics of Rush and Brooke, although the Greeks give it a 300ish vibe.
-
@KiwiMurph credit where it is due, great work Auckland rugby still calling out that BS tweet
-
You know when we had best provincial comp??
When we has 3 divisions.
I think some boffins who are much clever than me can mybe come up with a system, 3rd div amateur, 2nd div a bit of money and then proper semi pro top div?
I know it will lead to players moving (as it did pre pro days anyway) , but just a thought. I was on a provincial board in those days (of a 3rd div union) and there was pretty good interet, we only playing teams of own strength etc, and it worked! I know we will have cries of how will we get promotion/relegation, and I don't have all answers. but one thing would be to show finacials as well as playing ability to get promotion?
Just a thought fellas, so just call me an idiot quietly huh??
I will add I love NPC, but understand the problems etc. And we can't lose it or really end up with too short of a season, as NZ generally needs club rugby played when it is. -
Anyone got access to today's newsletter from Dylan Cleaver?
-
It's very affordable - I think it's something like 10 bucks for a year?
-
Ah yes, well I didn't say which currency I was talking about...
-
funny thing i know club teams whos budget is $500000 and most at least $180000
-
The NZ Herald posted a report from the Auckland/Harbour game. They pointed out that they don't post about the NPC, because no one reads it.
So, that's another data point to ignore while the NPC closes in upon extinction.

WTF really? in melbourne we get about 30-35k in subs, main sponsor is 10k, shoulder is 5k and then training tops are a couple each, so say another 25k in sponsors, so a generous 60k a year...thats why we cant afford to build clubrooms
can you say which club?

its a chicken and egg deal at the moment, we can just as easily say people arent interested because no one (NZR, PU, Media) are doing a good job hyping it....we might have to use some of the silverlake money to get people interested in it again...have to spend money to make money etc
interesting, they talk of a 1.1m cap, i say a thing in the net yesterday with a news report from 2006 about the NPC...im sure it said they wanted a cap of 2M then...suggesting teams were paying more than that back then, a huge drop
