Steve Hansen extends contract

Not sure I want someone to come into that environment cold.
-

Unfortunately for Dave, the NZRU probably don't either.

-
Foster is looking more and more likely...

I don't get the Schmidt love. How have Ireland moved forwards under him?

2013 proof that the top 2 inches it takes to beat us still isn't there. 2015 out in the quarter final of the RWC ... again. 2016, mid table in the 6N, with arguably one of the strongest squads.

What am I missing?
-
The Irish won the 6N two years in a row. Highest ever ratings in world rankings. They thought they were in with a shout for the RWC.

i'm cherry-picking here but if you compare soiling my pants in 2013 with the last test before schmidt at 60-0 - i reckon that's a step forwards.
-

Joe Schmidt has a better coaching CV in some ways than Henry or Hansen had at 50.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Schmidt_(rugby_union)

In the against column though, he's never been involved in a successful Super Franchise and Ireland played dour Rugby in the 2016 6 nations. -

That says it all. Being an AB coach not really that much about making a lousy team good, but its about having NZ talent and maximizing it. Cant really have that without being involved with Super Rugby success or the ABs.
-

He won back to back 6N...on points difference.

He engineered handy victories over Australia & SA.

And won a first test in SA.

But

1) No Grand slam

2) No ABs victory

3) Out in the 1/4 finals of the RWC. Again.

4) Looked a SA series victory gift horse in the mouth...and choked.

I would like to see success with a NZ super rugby team first before he's an AB coaching spot (I could live with assistant coach).
-
Steve Tew has already name-checked Joe Schmidt as a possible Future All Blacks coach, but also he suggested Schmidt couldn't go straight from the Ireland job but would need to spend some time with a Super Franchise.

http://www.irishtimes.com/sport/rugby/international/steve-hansen-s-new-contract-not-expected-to-alter-joe-schmidt-s-thinking-1.2733896

It is worth remembering what a good side Schmidt's Leinster were, probably the best NH provisional or club team of the professional era.

IMHO, Schmidt's successful time overseas including experience as a tier one international coach and his authoritive style with the media put him slightly (but only slightly ahead of Rennie, Foster and Joseph, but all four are excellent coaches, although I don't see a vacancy for the All Blacks coaching position for a while. -

people like rennie would never settle for an assistant mgr role for the AB's.

Why should they?

An assistant manager is hardly a great role to aspire to. Thats why Foster should be treated with suspicion. a failed head coach, who was happy to be an assistand really shouldnt be the head coach of the AB's

If the NZRU want to drive this career path of success in NZ, experience overseas - ideally of an intl side then come back for a assistant role in the abs before taking over the reins then that is flawed.

Head coaches are head coaches in my view. A good no. 2 is that for a reason - they wopuld like to be a head coach but dont have the skills. There are many expamples in in football to support this.

Why would a Cotter, Schmidt, Rennie move back to NZ for a lesser role, less money to get the AB job by succession. Succession would normally happen after a world cup. If we fail badly they will be at immediate threat. NZRU reat and bring someone in from the outside and they would probably bring in their own assistants.

Success has blighted our thinking and we are living in a fluffy world. lose a world cup and it will change

Didn't you just describe Hansen (except he's made a great coach)?

I would agree with Rennie's thinking if he had to be an assistant coach for 4+ years, but if it was 1-2 years I don't really see his problem.
-

Aside from the 4th point there Scmidt's issues with Ireland have been primarily have been depth based, no?

In the RWC especially they were like the Black Knight out of the Holy Grail. This would not be an issue for the ABs or a super franchise. Test quality players seem to play above expectations with him in the coach's box, he just can't turn journeymen into test players.
-

There is no doubt their RWC1/4 final was badly affected by injury: it wasn't injury to any 4 players, it was injury to 4 of their best players, plus O'Brien's self-inflicted suspension.

I have to say though, Schmidt seems to be a brilliant coach but a more than suspect selector.
-
I'd say Schmidt would be open to being an assistant, and following that route (if he's good enough).

He followed Cotter to Clermont as assistant, so don't see ego being an issue.

Loved his BOP backline from 04/05 seasons.
