New innovation by FIFA and a bizarre one.
Alex Scott on the BBC ‘What is this, the hunger games?’
BBC panel really impressed by the Soccer Ferns.
7 billion ppl on the planet, of which roughly 5bln know the rules. No need for this!
Yeah, BBC were really glowing. Although what Gabby "I host and know everything about every sport now" Logan knows about football could be written on a postage stamp.
Alex Scott as always worth a listen.

Ada Hegerberg was the poster girl a few years ago for Women’s’ Football globally and won the 2018 Ballon D’or Féminin. She has scored 40+goals for Norway. Rarely given a chance this evening.
Yeah, I mentioned the midfield but Bowen was great too in keeping Hegerberg quiet.

So we have US imports then? She reminds me of the over-enthusiastic yank on the PTA with me!
Don’t be so cynical. She showed heaps of emotion, clearly meant the world to her ! Terrific result.
Apparently this is the only WC game NZ has ever won?

Yup. I think we came close before, got robbed by a controversial hand ball. We were on a big losing streak coming into the tourney, so I don't think many picked us to win. We will be favourites against a Filipino team with nothing to lose, we will need to break them down

Yeah I am just a little bit scarred by over-enthusiastic yank in the committee - even looks like her! Very happy with the game, just getting flash backs

One whinge though, "football ferns" is a terrible nickname. Do better.
Dunno if we can do better, but we’ve certainly done worse - the Black Cocks (badminton) spring to mind

Aussie girls can't string two phases together
But what about the soccer?
-
Massive win for the girls, very happy for them. They really deserved that and looked the better team for large passages of the game.
The Norwegians seemed to have the wrong defensive set-up as there was always someone for the ferns to pass to especially from the back to the midfield which eased the pressure. Norway didn't seem to adjust at all, or press harder and higher up seemed to smack of "were better than them and it's only a matter of time before we score a goal" mindset which hurt them badly.
To be fair to Norway it's the best by a very long margin I've seen the football ferns play, composed on the ball, passed accurately to space, marked up and composed on defense and put away a fantastic planned move from their own goal-line for the match winning goal.
A fantastic start and I really hope they build on it as there's a very, very strong chance they can make it to the knockout rounds now.
