2023 World Rugby U20 Championship
-
I couldn't find the tournament rules for the 2023 U20 tournament (if anyone has a link, I'd much appreciate it if you post it), but this is from the 2019 U20 tournament rules, which seem to apply now, as well:
So it really doesn't have anything to do with helping SA qualify for the 1st-4th place semis. I agree this way of seeding teams produces crazy results.

@mikedogz what a stupid system...reads like we expect hosts SA to qualify, but they didn't so we will find a way for them to, any other comp would have them 6th
SA was trailing Argentina at HT and late into the game so were out. Georgia would have made the SFs instead.
WR continues to use this 3 Pool system, e.g., the women's sevens circuit.

If they persist with a 12 team tournament, have 4 pools of 3 teams. Top 2 teams go to a quarter final and the bottom ranked teams play off for 9-12. Everyone guaranteed 3 games and you don’t have this silly situation.

@taniwharugby you have time to delete this... I'm seeing comments like yours on FB as well. I'd be more concerned about the NZ side than SA getting into the semi finals
-
@taniwharugby was a bit of joke from myself. I do get why people who maybe have not followed the JWC previously look at the table and question why Georgia don't make the semis given this positive points difference but this is a rule that's been in place for as long as I can remember.

Why only the 12 teams?
Unlike women's 7s there's plenty of competitive countries that could naked up the next 4.
Scotland, Samoa,
Tongaare 3.Then you'd think the States,
Canada,Romaniawould be competitive. Those teams can’t even qualify for the next tier comp.
One option is to have 10 teams in both comps instead of 12 and 8.
Have two pools of 5 teams. Top two teams from each pool go into semis and there is a relegation of the bottom two teams the finalists of the second tier comp go up next time.
