There's been situations where players have been flown close during a RWC. Usually when there's an injury but they haven't decided if the injured player is definitely leaving the RWC squad.
They can't have contact with the squad. There's a regulation that no player can join a squad until something like 24hours after the injured player leaves. That's so teams close to the RWC venue don't have an advantage. The purpose of getting them nearby is to avoid jet lag

Yes, that's why I said they can't train with the main squad. They'd need to have different trainers/coaches there, if any at all. Use different facilities etc.

Pretty sure that they set the plans up well in advance in case say a halfback or hooker needs to join in the week leading up. As @Duluth said, get them up there early to adjust then join asap.

Just adding that despite a different location and being separated from the squad they are set up with the pattern book and prep plans well in advance -

Tom Christie and Andrew Makalio joined the squad before the Baabaas game.
I would guess about 25% of that squad won't be involved this year due to injury, current form, or better (non-Crusaders) players available. We might see a completely new group of locks.
Where is TJP in this? Still yet to play but could be thrown a lifeline.

Plus a few guys leaving NZ. There's not much point picking guys like MMT, Nankivell etc

@Duluth That will depend on what Foster and co see as the purpose of this team. If it is to provide a backup pool of players for the ABs then the same rules will apply as for the departing ABs. If it is to reward the next tier of players, then I agree.

IMO you want players committed to NZ Rugby 100% to win a World Cup, and that includes the backup players.Sport is such a mental game, having players that have checked out for the cash could be the difference in winning or losing.

@Bovidae I think there is a balance. For example, say Frizell and Akira Ioane don't make the All Blacks, as they are established backup options, you'd keep them in the loop. Someone like MMT who has never debuted though, you are better off picking say Sean Withy.

an AB XV starting loose trio of Finau, Sotutu and Harmon would give our starting AB trio an absolute bath.

@mariner4life almost everyone loves an upset, even at club level, last year in scrum training our 2's scrum demolished the 1's, was a huge wake up call for the 1's, a couple of people got a call up and other stepped up their game
sometimes losses dont spark people into life...they still have their job...someone who can actually take their job shows them up one on one....that can do wonders

too many years ago, the Qld State cup was Country rep sides playing against Brisbane Premier Grade side, to mostly predictable results.
We were actually leading one game at halftime, and the word is their Coach told them if they lost none of them would play prems again that year. Fuck we got pumped in the 2nd half. A large polynesian who went on to play many games for the Brumbies at #8 palmed me so hard i still have dents in my chest.
Threats to spots is still the greatest motivator
we won the fight though (not me obviously)
