QF: Blues v Tahs
-
Great support play from Telea. That's what I like about him - not just scoring tries but does the basics so well.
-
Tahs should bulk up in the off-season to better combat the physicality of the NZ teams.
-
@antipodean I recall an article saying exactly the same at the end of last season and that they were focusing on that in their pre=season,

That was the basis of my joke.

Good win to the Blues.
AK looks so much better playing tighter, certainly his best for the season IMO
Christie and BB and possibly coaching unit really need to take a look at the persistent use of that poor defensive bomb tactic.
Big red played very well tonight, superb lineout work in particular. -
@antipodean Maybe they could just fuck off entirely? Would be better for all involved.
Blues way below par only managing 41. Very disappointed to be so far wide of the mark with my prediction.

I think there's the basis of a competitive team at the Tahs, they just need better coaching (and a five-eighth). Accuracy and intent at the breakdown cost them. The scrum gave away important territory. Those are things they can fix.

Heard TJ say that no team has ever come to NZ and won a playoff game. Is that record right from the beginning of Super Rugby? Impressive if so.
Yup NZ undefeated at home in play offs vs foreign teams. But the fact hat home team wins 80 odd percent overall means that is not that meaningful

Tahs hampered by the loss of Gordon. I think he’s their best player.

Every Australian team.
As you joked, bulking up doesn't help, because then we don't have the pace.
The systems here are fucked. We can't compete with the Kiwi physicality because we simply don't breed the cattle to do it. It just isn't in the DNA of our piss-poor schools and pathways.
But none of the silly bastards will believe me while their school is winning.

And Bell and HJH
-
@antipodean I don't really agree. We need an entirely new tight five, except for Bell, who is suitable when fit.
Don't get me started on Donaldson. I had some hope for the backs when Harrison hit the team but he's now perma crocked.
Couple decent outside backs but whats the point when Edmed and Donaldson are inside you?

I wonder how many times the team coming first has lost a home final?
Lions Crusaders back in the days of shitty conferences where you could finish first without playing NZ teams.
It would be like our teams having to play Australia in cricket. It's a gulf that is hard to bridge.

@Bones I know you don’t like Clarke, but he’s in the top few of the clean breaks this year. Not sure that thought holds up.
I don't not like Clarke and he's definitely better this year, I just don't see the value in what he brings. Solid super rugby player and does a job, but I'd probably have two or three guys ahead of him that would be more useful higher up, including switching Telea. Plus stats don't tell the full story eh, are clean breaks those without beating a defender? How many turnovers? Genuine questions.
I reckon he'd make a good fist of centre actually, depending on handling (surely could oust Ennor and TUJ in that queue).
