Not sure I like the Penny option either good for Canterbury in the NPC but has not stepped up very well as a coach since then.
The only thing about it is his deep Canterbury roots understanding the Crusaders culture.
Nothing really being said about a coach in the wind at all.

Joseph is reluctant to be in the news for anything other than coaching Japan, out of respect for his employers and for the magnitude of the task that awaits him.
You will not be reading much at all about his feelings on the All Blacks coaching appointment process, on whether he is interested in coaching at Super Rugby level again, or on reports linking him to a role with a Japanese club.
He described as "absolute rubbish" a Newshub report last week that he had signed to coach the Shizuoka club next season, and his coaching future was not a topic he wished to discuss.
"I’m contracted to Japan. It’s a big job with the big challenge of the World Cup, so that’s my focus."
Three New Zealand teams — the Crusaders, the Hurricanes and the Blues — will be looking for Super Rugby coaches next year with the elevation of, respectively, Scott Robertson, Jason Holland and Leon MacDonald to the All Blacks.
Joseph did not want to talk about whether a return to his home country was on the cards.
"I’m just really focused on doing my best for Japan. I’m contracted until December, and no doubt those jobs will have been filled by then."
He has not spoken in public since his bid for the All Blacks coaching job ended when Robertson was appointed, and Joseph does not intend to create a headline about the process.
"I’d rather not comment.
"They’ve obviously made the decision with Scotty and his coaches. The process is done and dusted, and I’ve got a job to do with Japan."
The man who guided the Highlanders to their Super Rugby title in 2015 has called on fans to have some patience as their team continues to struggle.
"It’s really difficult to observe a couple of games from the outside and then try to comment.
"They’ve had lots of changes. Lots of new coaches and players. Lots of inexperience. It takes time.
"It’s going to take Derms [coach Clarke Dermody] and his team some time. Quality guys, quality coaches — you just need to be a little bit patient."

Not that he was in the Blues' sights, but where does this leave them. Are they now talking to Cotter?
The deathly silence from Auckland implies either some behind the scenes recruiting that the gossip grapevine isn't picking up on or they are waiting for other teams to throw them the candidates they don't want. -

@Crucial Just means that the Blues org talks less to the media. Not a bad thing.
True but I don't really believe he Blues are that leak proof and rumours circulate quite easily as shown by the other two franchises (and the Blues up to recently)
Maybe whoever they are targeting requires stuff to be kept on the low while they sort out other stuff and that would be good. For instance, I would think that Cotter would not like them to disclose or leak any discussions while he was interviewing with the Saders.
-
@Crucial Nogusta knows who it is, so they aren't fully leak proof.
I just find it amusing the narrative you are trying to push that the Blues are missing out on their choices. You don't know who they are going to. At all.
A journalist saying the Blues are targeting x y z, it no different than a poster reporting a rumour here. In fact, some of the posters here have better track records at predicitions.
-
@Stargazer I understand, it was after all at least three posts earlier;
"the deathly silence from Auckland implies either some behind the scenes recruiting that the gossip grapevine isn't picking up on or they are waiting for other teams to throw them the candidates they don't want."

@Stargazer call it what you like, but it's also the Fern way to call bullshit on made up stuff.
I'm confused. Am I making up that there is silence from the Blues?

I did wonder a while back if the Blues were making a mess of recruitment when it was reported that they had missed out on two preferred candidates. Just stating what was reported as fact and wondering if that would impact things with further candidates knowing they re at least 3rd preference.
No agenda or narrative in that. -

No agenda or narrative in that.Any my point is that you (and all of us) have no idea who their preferred candidates are, just lots of speculation in the press. Unlike other orgs, the Blues have kept quiet.

@Crucial You forgetting what you write?
"they are waiting for other teams to throw them the candidates they don't want"
Nice editing out of the word 'or'. My poor punctuation in missing the question mark but that word makes it clearly a question.
Speculation and raising questions is a big part of a discussion board is it not?

As is pointing out when speculation is unfounded and verring into fantasyland. You do know a discussion is two way right?

How is it unfounded when there are no clear known options? Of course there will be speculation just as the press have done. So far they have been 'in the know' around the Saders and Canes so it's valid to wonder why not the Blues.
You keep stating that they are great at keeping quiet. You have as much proof of that as I have of them scrambling.I'm happy for discussion around it, just not having my posts called bullshit, being accused of pushing a narrative or implication that my speculation is any more unfounded than your own.
-
Your comment about "OR they are waiting for other teams to throw them the candidates they don't want" is unfounded bullshit.
Just because journalists don't know who the options are doesn't meant here are no clear options. As I said, it looks like the Blues (based on the lack of leaks) are treating the hiring process with a bit more privacy than other orgs.

Where have I heard that before? That's right I typed this just before the bit you (mis(quoted)
